Merlin Morse Obituary

Merlin Joshua Morse, of Littleton, Maine, passed away peacefully on the morning of June 6 at Eastern Maine Medical Center following a brief and unexpected stay. He was constantly surrounded by his loved ones during this time. Merlin, the youngest of seven siblings, was born in Bridgewater, Maine to Etta and Joshua Morse. He was a 1953 graduate of Bridgewater Classical Academy. He was predeceased by his parents and six sisters. His sisters were: Janet McKinnon, Phyllis Bradbury Kennedy, Verna Shaw, Lois Shaw Antworth, Leota McNinch Roberts, and Jesse Oparowski. Merlin, affectionately known as “Cub” or “Cubby”, married Eva Mae McKinnon on December 2, 1960, in a lovely ceremony at Bridgewater Baptist Church. While building their first house together in Littleton, Merlin was called upon to serve in the United States Army. After finishing his time in the service, he returned to finish their home and continue his carpentry career. They have two children together who both reside in Houlton. His daughter, Laurie Ann “Big Girl” Morse is married to Roger Byron and their children are Caleb, Elayna, and Lydia. His son, DeWayne “Bearcat” Morse, has two sons, Ethan and Isaac. Merlin was a tireless carpenter for his entire life. He was self-taught, and he enjoyed nothing more than making people happy by building or fixing things for them. Whether it was a first-home for a young couple, or building a picnic table for someone’s special family gathering, he put the same care and attention into every project. Over the years, he had the pleasure of working with generations of local families. It gave him immense pleasure to know he was helping people. He was quick to smile and playfully tease with everyone he encountered. His generosity was unparalleled. He was a man of few hobbies. He instead chose to focus on the never-ending telephone calls asking for help with whatever anyone needed. It may surprise many to learn that a few hours of relaxation for him might include watching wrestling on the television, or perhaps sitting in his recliner quietly, listening to classical music. An incredible meal for him might include lobster rolls with his wife, Eva, or it might be grabbing two hot dogs and a soda from the local gas station. His entire family will also greatly miss driving on Route #1 and suddenly finding themselves in a long-line of traffic only to eventually discover it was Cub, chocolate milk in hand, driving in the breakdown lane with his fully-loaded pickup truck on his way to a worksite. It would be remiss not to share the love and compassion he demonstrated to his wife and family every single day of his life. He quietly and generously provided for them and ensured them every opportunity to have the best life possible. His willingness to help others had no limit. We all will sorely miss his presence. There will be a private ceremony with his loved ones held at Smith Cemetery in Bridgewater on Wednesday, June 10, at 1:00 in the afternoon. Immediately following the brief ceremony, all are welcome to participate in a drive by procession of his final resting place. A guestbook and basket for cards will be provided.
