Raymond E. Toopes, 85, of Ottumwa, died at 8:37 a.m. June 6, 2020 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. He was born January 27, 1935 in Ottumwa to Jasper Lee and Veona Carl Toopes. Ray married Connie Sue Grimes on November 10, 1967 and she preceded him in death on April 4, 2020. Enlisting on August 25, 1955, Ray was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served almost 20 years, including in Vietnam. After his military service, he worked for ACCO-Babcock in Fairfield. He loved hunting, fishing, his dog Nile and especially loved his grandchildren. Surviving are his children, Brandy Klein and Tim Toopes both of Ottumwa; 3 grandchildren, Blake and Ryan Klein and Jase Toopes; sisters, Fern Pate of Omaha, NE, Mabel Headley and Patty Long, both of Ottumwa. He was preceded in death by sisters, Maxine Root, Pearl Guthrie, and Betty Katzenburger; brothers, John, Leonard and infant Robert Toopes; infant half-brother, Samuel Toopes; ; and a step-brother, Darrell Carl. Private funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home. Military services will be conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Cremation will follow the services.
