Obituary

On Tuesday, June 2, 2020, Shirley Peak Greene, loving mother of four children, thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren went home to be with Jesus at the age of 84 surrounded by her amazing family. During her last moments, there was singing and comfort while she drew her last breath.

Shirley Peak Greene was born in Cuthbert, Georgia on August 18, 1935 to Clinton and Marene Hamby Peak. She was married to Bill Greene on July 25, 1954 for 54 years. Shirley devoted thirty six years to teaching special needs children at the Randolph County School System, where she retired. Not only did she touch the lives of many children at school, she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School where she was an active member of New Bethel Baptist Church.

Family was the joy of her life, she considered the most precious jewels to be not those around her neck, but the loving arms of her children and progeny. When she wasn’t taking care of her family, you would find her crocheting, reading, journaling, and drinking coffee from her favorite mug.

Shirley was welcomed into heaven by her parents and husband, as well as her sons, David and Dwayne Greene. She left behind her only daughter, Debra (Harold) Kleckley and her youngest son, Danley (Charme) Greene, and two daughters “by law” Peggy Hamrick Greene (David) and Judy Simpson Greene (Dwayne). Not only did she touch the lives of her children, but numerous grandchildren including: Heather (Larry) Worsley, Wendy Kleckley (Rhonda Collins), James (Michelle) Kleckley, Shannon (Brian) Beasley, Kristen Greene (Matt Williams), Kevin Greene, Brandi Greene, Amanda (Ryan) Darby, Matthew (Lauren) Greene, Taylor Greene (Clayton Hall), Maci Greene, and Marigrace Garcia-Simmons. Her circle of love was completed by numerous great-grandchildren and a sister, Lynette Peak Yelverton. We would like to give a special thanks to her caregivers, Vickie Hopwood and Genia Foster, as well as Phoebe Hospice.

Shirley’s homegoing celebration will be on Thursday, June 4, 2020 at 3 o’clock in the afternoon at New Bethel Baptist Church. Friends and family are invited to attend her graveside service while following social distancing. Shirley’s name means “cheerful,” so we invite you to honor her colorful life by wearing something “cheerful” and bright. Donations can be made to the New Bethel Baptist Church, c/o of Anna Mote, at 41 Mote Road, Cuthbert, GA 39840
