Philip “Phil” Mercer, 97, of Martinsburg, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great friend to many passed away Saturday, May 30, 2020 at Martinsburg Veterans Hospital. Born October 29, 1922 Kabletown, WV, he was the son of the late Joseph William Mercer and Viola Kleingenberg Mercer. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen and Ann and one brother, Clifton. He graduated from Charles Town High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an aircraft gunner on USS Liberty. He owned and operated Phil Mercer’s Radio & TV Repair and Antique Auction & Flea Market for many years. He was also employed by Fairchild Aircraft and the Berkeley County School Board as a bus driver. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as rural mail carrier where he retired in 2005 at the age of 83; continuing to “wheel and deal” antiques and collectibles until his death. He loved the outdoors as a lifelong avid hunter, fisherman, Washington Redskins and Nationals fan. He was a member of and PER of Elks club #778, American Legion Post 14, VFW Post 896, Moose Lodge 120, Orisis Shrine of Martinsburg and Wheeling, Equality Lodge #44, 32nd Mason, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Faternal Order of Police, Ruritan Clubs. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Martinsburg, but was currently attending Greensburg United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Wanda; two daughters, Linda Wisecarver (Bob), Gail Y. Batten (Pete); three grandchildren, Shea O’Leary, Traci Crawford (Mark) and Chris Wisecarver; three great-grandchildren; Hailee O’ Leary, Kayla Crawford and Zachary Wisecarver. He was very proud of all; Hailee, who is now serving in the U.S. Air Force continuing military service in the family. The Brown Funeral Home will be open for family to receive friends only from the hours of 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Thursday, June 4, 2020. Visitors will be required to wear face masks, practice social distancing, and follow directives. Graveside service will be held on Friday, June 5, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Edgehill Cemetery in Charles Town with Rev. Dr. Ed Grove officiating.
