Lynwood Sterling Gillis Obituary

Lynwood Sterling Gillis Obituary Lynwood Sterling Gillis, a beloved husband father, grandfather and friend born February 11, 1940 in Southern Pines, North Carolina. He was the only child born to Mrs. Bertha Brown Gillis, a School Teacher and Mr. George Lorenzo Gillis, a Navy Officer. At the age of 11, Lynwood accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Southern Pines, North Carolina. At an early age he moved to New York where he attended Public School. He had a full young life living between North Carolina and New York. He continued his schooling at, St. Emma's Military Academy in Powhatan County, Virginia. St. Emma's was a school established for African American boys patterned after the educational philosophy of Booker T. Washington with training emphasis on practical skills. Lynwood settled down in New York, he married the love of his life Mrs. Mozelle Stewart Gillis in October 1962 at St. Charles Borromeo Church in New York, New York. Together they had three loving sons Rodney, Robert, and Ronald Gillis. As well as three loving grandchildren Calvin, Kevin and Monai Gillis whom they dedicated their lives to raising as their own. Lynwood became a member of Convent Avenue Baptist Church under the Pastorate of the late Rev. Manny L. Wilson. His commitment to CABC includes his service as Security for both Pastor Wilson and the late Pastor Clarence P. Grant. It was under Pastor Grant that he became involved in all aspects of CABC Security: including opening and closing the Church. So effective was he, that he became the "Go-To" person for all things CABC. He was also a member of the Tape Ministry, The Brotherhood (now Men's Ministry) and Senior Citizens Ministry. He loved the members of CABC as if they were his own family and they loved him just the same. In addition to his service at CABC, he was also dedicated to his professional career. He worked for the Coca-Cola Company as a Distributor, The Dynamic Trucking Company as a Supervisor; and as a UPS Delivery Driver until his retirement in April 2011. He often attributed his hard work and dedication, to the training and skills he received at St. Emma's Military Academy. Even after retirement he still remained a faithful servant continuing to carry out his duties at CABC. He served until his health declined and forced him to retire in 2017. He remained an active member until the Lord called him home. He is proceeded in death by his Mother Bertha Brown, Father George Gillis, Wife Mozelle Stewart-Gillis and Son Robert Gillis. He leaves to cherish his memory his sons: Rodney Gillis Las Vegas, Nevada, Ronald Gillis New York, New York. Grandchildren: Calvin Gillis New York, New York, Kevin Gillis, Philadelphia Pennsylvania and Monai Gillis New York, New York. Great grandchildren: Donte Gillis, Yanice Gillis, Jaisa Gonzalez, Jyana Gonzalez, Maya Gillis, Sacred-Lyn Hammond and Calvin Gillis Jr. A host of relatives, loving friends and his CABC family.
