Linda Sue Downing, 67, of Carbon passed away Friday, May 29, 2020 in Ascension St. Vincent Clay E.R. She was born in Brazil on September 5, 1952, the daughter of Robert and Betty (Brown) Matherly. Linda attended Brazil High School and married Steve Downing on April 21, 1987. She loved spending time with her family, especially with her grand and great-grandchildren. Linda attended Carbon United Methodist Church. She was a Corrections Officer with the Indiana Department of Corrections. Linda was a faithful viewer of her soaps on television. Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Matherly and Betty Matherly Goodnight; and a son, Shawn Cooksey. Survivors include her loving husband of 33 years, Steve Downing; a son, Gary Cooksey; daughters, Kim Cooksey and companion, Richard Brown and Stephanie Lanke and husband, Kevin; grandchildren, Anthony and Tyler Cooksey, Shawna Dowell, Tayler and Tara Bell and Sara Cooksey, several great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Robert Matherly (Jenny), Larry Matherly (Phyllis) and Jeff Matherly (Shannon) and 2 sisters, Barbara Smith (Steve) and Connie Osborne. Under Linda’s instructions, cremation was selected with burial of her cremains at Calcutta Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of French Funeral Home, 421 E.
