Stanley Earl Rumford Obituary

The village of Thedford was filled with sounds of vehicle horns and church bells this morning as Thedford paid respects appropriately during covid-19 restrictions as immediate family drove through town. Please join family for the Memorial Service online for Mr. Stan Rumford, conducted at Pinehill Cemetery.

Stanley Earl Rumford of Thedford passed away peacefully on Friday, May 29, 2020, at St. Joseph’s Hospice in Sarnia at the age of 83.

Stan deeply loved his loyal and dedicated wife Donna, who sat by his side during his final days, holding his hand as they had done so many times during their 63 years of marriage. Stan and Donna proudly raised their family of Kevin (Darlene) Rumford, Karen (Ken) Werden, Lori (Ron) Hodgins, and Kim (Rob) Arnel in their small town, taking pride in their many accomplishments. Stan leaves behind an amazing legacy in his grandchildren, Wendy (Jason), Cassie (Martin), Brittany (Ben), Andie (Tyler), Julie (Rob), Tyler (Rebecca), Justin (Katie), Kandis (Mitch), Kyle, Kevin (Jess), Austin, Logan and was able to enjoy the smiles and laughter of yet another generation in his 14 great-grandchildren. Stan is predeceased by his son David (1957) and grandchildren Adam (1988), and Jaden (2001)

Stan will be missed by his brother Grant (Marian) Rumford, sister in law Lorraine Rumford, and is predeceased by his siblings Gordon (2010), Linda (2014), and infant brother Murray (1948). Growing up the eldest in a family of 5, on the farm on the 4th concession, and attending S.S.#12 Bosanquet School until 1950 when they then moved to Thedford.

Always a staple in the small town of Thedford, Stan could be seen at Rumford Canary Lines that he established in 1968, or driving one of his yellow and black trucks. Stan was always a hard worker and used his trucks for a variety of jobs. If there was a task to complete it, he was up for the challenge. Stan loved his trucks, but long after he was finished driving big rigs, Stan found himself a new set of wheels, a wine red scooter, highly visible with his construction vest proudly draped over the seat. It was common to see him out and about, stopping in to visit everyone as he took to the streets of the town he was so much a part of. A former member of the Thedford Fire Department, former president of the Thedford Optimist Club and former president of the Thedford Jr D Hockey Club Stan took great pride in his community.

Stan was truly a family man and gave meaning to the term “Grumford” with his gruff exterior, and somewhat stubborn ways. However, inside that tough exterior, was an absolute heart of gold. Stan enjoyed the company of his dogs, camping, and going to antique truck shows, however, nothing brought him more pride than his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Enjoying their smiles, the laughter, the many stories, and memories. Stan was truly thankful for the gift of his family.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. Maddison, the incredible staff at St. Joseph’s Hospice, and Stan’s Home Care nurse Patti. Donations are appreciated to the St. Joseph's Hospice in Sarnia or Knox Presbyterian Church of Thedford.

A private family graveside service will take place, although the service is private, family and friends, young and old are asked and encouraged to show your respects by honking your horn from your driveway, or by practicing safe distancing on Main Street in Thedford on Thursday, June 4, 2020 at 10:45am. A public celebration of life will take place at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Gilpin Funeral Chapel, 123 King Street East in Forest.
