Elder Wayne Smith

Elder Wayne Smith, 90, of San Angelo, passed away on January 28, 2017 at a local nursing home. Wayne was born on January 18, 1927 to Elder and Ella (McIntosh) Smith in Brownwood, TX. He worked as a Meter Technician for Conoco Petroleum. On September 5, 1947, he married Margaret Haas in San Angelo. Wayne wanted to serve his country so adamantly that he misinformed the US Navy of his age so that he could serve his country during WWII. During the war he served on the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid. He was a mason and belonged to the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. Wayne served as Mayor for Mertzon, he also served three terms as Irion County commissioner along with volunteering for the Irion County Volunteer Fire Department and as an EMT. Wayne served on the boards of MHMR of San Angelo and St. Paul Presbyterian Church. Elder is survived by son, Steve Smith, daughter, Karen Flint and life partner Cindy Alves all of San Angelo; two granddaughters, Kristi Flint, Paige Smith; three grandsons, Jeffery Todd Johnston, Aaron Flint and wife, Amy, Dalton Smith; five great-granddaughters, Courtney Derrick, Jadyn Johnston, Jenesis Johnston, Emily Flint, Lilly Hodel; two great-grandsons, Josiah Johnston and Jared Flint. He was preceded in death by parents, Elder and Ella Mae Smith, wife of 60 years, Margaret Smith and daughter, Margaret Johnston. Family visitation will be held from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm on Wednesday, February 1, 2017, at Robert Massie Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday, February 2, 2017, at the St. Paul Presbyterian Church, San Angelo, Texas, with Pastor Christi Brennan, officiating. Burial will take place in the Mertzon Cemetery under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Randy Flint, Joe David West, Harvey Flores, Roger Smith, Jason Alaman and Daymon Smith In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the MHMR Services for the Concho Valley, 1501 W.
