Doris Higdon

Doris’s Life Reflection Doris Ella Higdon was born in Roebuck, South Carolina on July 24, 1940 to the late Velma Corrine McWhorter and John H. McWhorter. She departed this life on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Lincoln Crawford Nursing Home. Doris accepted Christ at early age at Foster Chapel Baptist Church in Roebuck, South Carolina. After moving to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1956, she joined Bethel Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Harry Brown. Doris attended elementary and junior high school in Roebuck, South Carolina. After moving to Cincinnati, Ohio she attended Withrow High School where she received her high school diploma. Doris furthered her education by attending the University of Cincinnati where she majored in social science; psychology and communications. She attended CTC College to receive her degree in real estate. She attended graduate school for nursing in the Village of New York University where she majored in micro psychology. Doris worked for various hospitals and various homes doing private duty nursing. She worked at various group homes where she helped with mental and disabled children and adults. She also was an administrative secretary for P & G and the Court House. Doris was also in public affairs where she hosted her TV talk show called Ms. D’ora Talks “Upfront”. Her show was shown on Media Bridges with Time Warner Cable local channel. On her show she focused on interviewing people dealing with health, education, community organizations and news briefs. She could also be seen in the Cincinnati Herald. She continued to host her show until her health started to fell. Doris loved life and loved people. She was not a stranger to no one. She enjoyed being with her family during the holidays, and she would show up at your door at given any time, whether it was to visit or stay over for a few days. She had a love for her great niece Tiffany who always had a special place in her heart. She enjoyed traveling all around different states, dancing, and bowling. But mostly she enjoyed going to visit her special cousin Hattie Mae in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Doris was united in holy matrimony to Claude Anton Higdon the year of 1967, to that union she became a stepmother to two beautiful daughters. She is preceded in death by her step-daughter Claudia Higdon; one sister Rosa Juanita Yarbrough; one brother John Willie McWhorter; one great-nephew Larry Ricardo Lee. Doris is survived by: husband Claude Anton Higdon; one step-daughter Linda (Barry) Bates; sisters Mary Louise Branson Williams of New York; Eloise Hillstock of Spartanburg, South Carolina; brothers Sammy L. Rogers; John Charles McWhorter of Roebuck, South Carolina; nine step-grandchildren; seventeen step-grandchildren; a host of nieces; nephews; great nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. God Looked Around His Garden God looked around His garden And found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you And lifted you to rest. God's garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb, So He closed your weary eyelids And whispered 'Peace be thine.' It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn't go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home. Visitation is from 10:00 am until 11:00 am on Tuesday, January 24, 2017, at the Walker Funeral Home-West End Chapel, 930 Findlay Street, Cincinnati (45214). At the end of each life is a legacy of love and memories. Hold tight to those memories…. Lean on each other for support. And look to God’s Word, the Bible, for comfort and strength. 1 Peter 5:7 encourages; “Throw all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.”
