William 'Bill' Aubyn Lyon, Jr. Obituary

DURHAM: Mr. William Bill Aubyn Lyon, Jr., born on March 17, 1921 in Durham, North Carolina. He was the son of the late William Aubyn Lyon, Sr. and Lessie Rogers Lyon. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Edgar Rogers Lyon, and sister-in-law, Daisy Bixler Lyon. Mr. Lyon is survived by his wife of 58 years, Bonnie Miller Lyon; daughter, Kathy Lyon Reynolds and her husband, Julian; son, William Morrison Lyon and his wife, Pam of Marietta, Georgia; grandchildren, Bradley and Kayla Reynolds, April Lyon Freeman, Heather, Kevin, Gregory and Scott Lyon; 3 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Jerry Scott Miller and wife, Nancy of Buena Vista, VA; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Lyon was the former Secretary and Treasurer of W.C. Lyon Hardware Co. In earlier years, he participated in numerous civic affairs in Durham. He served on the Board of Directors and was Vice Presidents of Jr. Chamber of Commerce (1951), the Merchants Association, President of Salvation Army Boys Club, Member of Board of Directors Old Hillandale Golf Course, Executive Officer Durham Squadron Civil Air Patrol, and a Charter Member of Durham Chapter International Management Club. He also was the Production Supervisor of Reeves Brothers, Vulcan Plant in Buena Vista, VA. Mr. Lyon was also a member of the Buena Vista Rotary Club, a coach of the Virginia State Champion Softball team, a participant in the World Softball Series in Toledo, Ohio in 1954. He also worked at Brame Specialty Co, and Royal Home Fashions in Durham. He was a past president of Mt. Sylvian Ruritan Club. Mr. Lyon proudly served four years with the United States Marine Corps in World War II in the Pacific and was a life time member of the Marine Corp League. He also traveled with A Flight of Honor to Washington D.C. A graduate of Durham High School, Mr. Lyon was an outstanding track and wrestling athlete. He retired from Southchem, Inc. as Operations Manager in 1984. He was a member of Hope Valley Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 15, 2016 at Hope Valley Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Bigger officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30-1:45 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Capital Campaign Fund, Hope Valley Baptist Church, 6900 Garrett Rd., Durham, NC 27707.
