Dr. Mabel Roberta Paige

Dr. Mabel Roberta Paige, age 90 of New Castle, passed away the afternoon of April 22, 2020, at UPMC Jameson Hospital. Born August 27, 1929, in Pittsburgh, PA, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Estelle (Bynum) Allen. On February 15, 1959, Mabel married her beloved husband, Dr. James Recitous Paige, who preceded her in death on May 23, 2014. Mabel was and educator for 37 years. She worked for the Pittsburgh Area School District as well as the New Castle Area School District, where she retired as a principal. Forever the dedicated educator, Dr. Paige was a member of the Kappa Delta Pi educational honor society, directed the West Side Tutoring Center and was a member of the National Association of Elementary Principals. She was appointed to the council of trustees at Slippery Rock University. Mabel has been recognized with the Notable Americans Award, American Business Women’s Association Boss of the Year Award and the Blind Association of Pennsylvania community service award. Mabel was a member of the Platinum Member of the Links, Inc., was a Golden Heritage member of the NAACP and received the NAACP community service award. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Dr. Paige was named First Lady of New Castle of 1995. She was also a member of the Second Baptist Church. She enjoyed photography and dress making. She is survived by one son, James R. Paige, Jr. and wife Floretta Perkins Paige, of New Castle and one sister, Evelyn Johnson of California. Along with her parents and husband, Mabel is preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Allen and Thelma Weeden; a half-sister, Jeanne Allen Page and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. There will be no visitation or services at this time, due to the pandemic. A memorial service will be announced at a later date, by the R. Cunningham Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. Burial will be at Oak Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Mabel’s honor to the donor’s favorite charity.
