Davie C Spindle Obituary

Davie C. Spindle was born in August of 1945 to Clarence and Mildred Spindle in Ft. Worth, Texas. He passed away at the Jack C. Montgomery VA Hospital on Monday April 13, 2020. Shortly after Davie was born, the family moved north and settled on a ranch outside of Checotah. After elementary school at Onapa, Davie attended Checotah schools through graduation and then went on to further his education at Eastern Oklahoma State College and Oklahoma State University. Davie went on to serve as an intelligence specialist in the US Navy, including two tours during the Vietnam conflict, first aboard the USS Coral Sea, and then aboard the USS Intrepid in the Gulf of Tonkin. At Eastern, he met the woman that would become his bride, mother of his children, and love of his life for 54 years, Carol Ann Akins. Together they owned and operated the McIntosh County Democrat for 13 years, covering all the happenings in and around Checotah and the entire county, as well as throwing in an “occasional” opinion piece. Many people throughout the area enjoyed stopping in the newspaper office to have a cup of coffee and “cuss and discuss”. After selling the newspaper, Davie turned his attention to economic development and helping create jobs, encourage entrepreneurs, and bring industry to southeastern Oklahoma through the Oklahoma State Department of Commerce, and later through private consultation for both the city of Checotah and the city of Poteau. Throughout his life, Davie was involved in numerous organizations including Checotah Chamber of Commerce, President of Lions Club, Commander of Arnall-Sampson-Walker American Legion Post 21, Leadership LeFlore County, Poteau Chamber of Commerce, LeFlore County Development Coalition, Kiwanis, President of the Board of Regents for Eastern Oklahoma State College, and countless others. He was also a lifelong Democrat, serving on all levels from local to national as an officer and a delegate. One of Davie’s favorite sayings was “think globally, act locally” and he did both every chance he got. Davie was always willing to give advice or lend a hand whenever or wherever needed, and he never met a stranger. You could always find Davie at various civic events – parades, pancake breakfasts, or pie suppers – and he always made time to talk to whoever would listen, often leaving Carol and his girls waiting on him to finish before they could finally go home. One of Davie’s favorite things to do was support his beloved Checotah Wildcats, and for 23 years you could find him sitting in the press box at every home game and calling out plays in a distinctive way that earned him the title “The Voice of The Wildcats”. Anyone who ever went to a game knew that when you heard that booming voice come over the loudspeaker and say “heeere cooooooooome the Wildcats!!!” it was time to play ball, and any player who ever heard Davie say his name still remembers it with fondness. Davie was preceded in death by his parents and younger sister Tanya. He leaves behind his wife Carol, daughter Kristi and husband Travis Barlow of Checotah, daughter Audrey and husband Cass Smith of Stilwell, daughter Jamie and husband Aaron Hilbert of Checotah, 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren (plus one on the way) to carry on his loving legacy. He will also be missed by his niece Trina and husband Tiger Welty of Checotah, nephew Steve and wife Lorie Rutledge of Poteau, nephew Jimmy and wife Amanda Akins of Poteau, and several great- and great-great-nieces, nephews, and cousins. Due to current circumstances, a memorial service is tentatively planned for July 4th – Davie’s favorite holiday. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to Heifer International either online at heifer.org or through their home office ATTN: Donor Services, Heifer International, 1 World Ave., Little Rock, AR 72202 in honor of Davie Spindle.
