"Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, let me stand, I am tired, I am weak, I am worn, Through the storm, through the night, lead me on through the light, take my hand, precious Lord, and lead me home" Mattie was born on October 12, 1925 to John and Mary Elizabeth Gentry in Phenix, Virginia. At an early age little Miss Mattie confessed her faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was baptized at the St. Louis Baptist Church, Charlotte Court House, Virginia. She was educated in Charlotte House, Virginia. She received her high school diploma from Central High School. After spending her tender years in Virginia, Mattie traveled on to New York where she met and married Leonard H. Pruitt. To this union, five children were born: Ara Louise, Larry, Brenda, Brian, and Lomesa Ruth. After acquiring this wonderful family they all moved to Newark, New Jersey where most of their life was spent. In 2011 Mattie relocated to Lansing, Michigan and united with Union Missionary Baptist Church of the leadership of Rev. Dr. Melvin T. Jones. She was a member of the Senior Ministry. Her lifelong devotion to God and her family were absolute and was demonstrated every day that she lived. A classy lady was Mattie Pruitt and dressed so eloquently. She loved to greet people with a smile and never missed a chance in tell you how the Lord blessed her. Mrs. Pruitt loved word search, dancing to any type of music and talking on the phone to family and friends. On Friday March 20, 2020, Mattie LeeElla Pruitt departed this world to rejoice in the presence of her Heavenly Father. She was preceded in her homegoing by her parents, husband, three children, Ara Louise, Brian, and Lomesa Ruth. Many precious memories will be shared by children – Larry and Brenda, sisters – Lucille Bean, Mary Gentry, Maggie Mosley, Raleigh Hodges; grandchildren – Harold, Emerald, and Brittany Pruitt, several cousins including special cousins Joseph and Mae Ferguson; special friend, Inez Appling; and a host of nieces and nephews, and many supportive friends. "A time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance.” – Ecclesiastes 3:4
