Sidney Minor Obituary

Sidney Minor, 85, of Shinnston, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday, May 9, 2011 at 7:05 AM at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He leaves behind a loving wife of 63 years, Virginia Matheny Minor. He was born in Shinnston on March 23, 1926 a son of the late O. Lester “Bugs” Minor and Stella Drain Minor. In addition to his wife, Virginia, Sidney is survived by his children, Sharon May and husband Carl of Wadsworth, OH; Kay Ford and husband Richard of Fairmont; Peggy Collins and husband David of Shinnston; Danny Minor and wife Lavinia of Shinnston; and Randy Minor and wife Sarah of Harpers Ferry; sister-in-law, Deloris Minor of Shinnston; 7 grandchildren, Scott Shingleton; Dennis Minor; Kevin Minor; Diane Collins; Danielle Minor Moore; Jessica Minor Reese; and Amanda Collins Haught; 13 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. Sidney was also preceded in death by his step-mother, Thelma Cowgar Minor; 2 grandchildren, Michael Ray Shingleton; and Judith Lynn Collins; his brothers, Marvin; Wilbert; and Dennis Minor; and his sister, Mary Minor. Mr. Minor served our country in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater as a radioman aboard the USS Mt. McKinley, USS Ancon, and the USS Blue Ridge. He received two Gold Stars for major battles. Sidney was the Vice President of the Boy Scouts of Shinnston and organized the first Weblo Den. He also helped organize the new addition to the Shinnston Bi-County Nutrition Center Building. He was a member of the North Shinnston Baptist Church where he served as the Head Deacon, Superintendent of the Sunday School and Church Treasurer. As well as many other positions within the church. Sidney retired from the Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 476 in Bridgeport. Sidney enjoyed music. He played guitar and sang vocals with the “Do-Gooders” band. They entertained at local nursing homes, the Veterans Hospital; United Hospital and the Bi-County programs. Sidney enjoyed working with wood in his shop where he made many gifts for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The most treasured of these gifts was a new car for their train set that he started for them. One granddaughter has 32 cars for her train set. Sidney was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose greatest joy was spending time with his family. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Friends will be received at the Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston on Wednesday from 12 Noon – 9 PM. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, May 12 at 11:00 AM with Pastors Gary Layfield and Brian Plum officiating. Interment will follow at the Shinnston Masonic Cemetery.
