Dorothy Hill Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Dorothy Edith Hill (nee Cargill), on January 16, 2020, at St. Boniface Hospital with family at her side. She will be forever missed and forever remembered by Robert, her loving husband of 57 years, son David (Brenda), daughter Donna, grandson Aaron, granddaughter Amber (Kingsley), great-grandson Connor and great-granddaughter Jainna. Dorothy was born in Portage La Prairie on July 17, 1940. Her parents James and Alice Cargill, moved the family to Winnipeg when Dorothy was two years old. Dorothy grew up in St. James, graduating from St. James Collegiate. After marrying Robert in 1963, Dorothy became a military wife, and over the years, had to move homes to Trenton, Ontario and Edmonton, Alberta, before being transferred back to Winnipeg and eventually to Portage La Prairie. In addition to being a wife and mother, Dorothy worked in many roles over the years , including as a teacher’s aide, a real estate agent, and a provincial civil servant in the Women’s Directorate and the Seniors Directorate. Dorothy was a strong advocate for women’s and seniors’ rights. She was particularly proud of the key role she played in setting up the shelter system for abused women in Manitoba. Dorothy also undertook a variety of volunteer activities. Dorothy excelled in every job or task she took on. She was a kind, giving person, who gave help to anyone who needed it, and made friends wherever she went. She also had a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humour. A Celebration of Dorothy’s Life will be held on Friday, January 24, 2020, at 1 pm at the Oakbank Baptist Church, 26033 Springfield Road, Oakbank, Manitoba with Reverend Kristin Woodburke officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dugald Community Club, 544 Holland St., Dugald MB, R0E 0K0.
