MORRIS
Sister Mary Philomena, CSJP, 85 yrs old, died peacefully at St. Michael Villa on
Tuesday, June 7, 2016. She was born on February 17, 1931 in Sligo, Ireland, to the
late William Morris and Anne E. Devins Morris.
Sister Mary entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace in Cabra,
County Down, Northern Ireland on February 11, 1953, and came to St. Michael
Novitiate, Englewood Cliffs, N.J. on September 12, 1953. She pronounced Final Vows
there on August 22, 1959.
Sister Mary had a B.S. in Education and Certification in Accounting and Computers.
She was a Teacher in Elementary Schools in New Jersey: St. Anne, Fair Lawn; St.
Joseph, Medford; Holy Rosary, Edgewater; St. Margaret, Little Ferry; Corpus Christi,
South River; St. Rose of Lima, East Hanover; St. Michael, which later became Notre
Dame Interparochial,
Palisades Park; and also taught at St. Didacus, Sylmar,
California.
Sister was Payroll Supervisor and Accountant at St. James Hospital, Newark, N.J. and
at St. Peter’s Medical Center, New Brunswick, N.J.; Office Manager at McCarrick
Nursing Home, New Brunswick, N.J.; and Administrative Assistant at Mother Seton
Residence, Montclair, N.J. Retiring to St. Michael Villa in 1997, Sr. Mary served as a
Group Leader with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Sister was predeceased
by her brothers John Morris and Liam Morris of Ireland and
her sister, Vera Thorley of Manchester, England. She is survived by her brother Vincent
in Ireland and her sister Bernadette Nicolaus of Maine.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 10, 2016 from 27
PM at St. Michael Villa, 399
Hudson Terrace, Englewood Cliffs, NJ. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be on Saturday,
June 11, 2016 at 9:30 AM in St. Michael Villa Chapel. Interment at Holy Cross
Cemetery, North Arlington, NJ.
