Richard K. Des Jean Obituary

Richard K. “Dick” Des Jean, 90, of Decatur, IN, passed away at his residence on Sunday, December 20, 2015. He was born on December 31, 1924, in Indianapolis, IN, to the late Cyril S. and Mary (Kipley) Des Jean; however he was raised by Frank and Florence (Kipley) Des Jean. On June 23, 1951, he married Julianne (Meyer), she preceded him in death on May 9, 2005.


He was member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society. He was also a 1942 graduate of Decatur Catholic High School.


Dick served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He worked for 39 years for the United Telephone Company, retiring in 1985. He volunteered for 18 years at St. Joseph Catholic School.


He was a loving, compassionate, and caring husband and put his family above all else. He enjoyed babysitting and was a “taxi grandfather.” He was also a lifelong, die hard Chicago Cubs fan.


He is survived by 3 sons, Paul F. (Cindy) Des Jean of rural Decatur, R. Chris (Sue) Des Jean – rural Decatur, and Tim R. Des Jean of Phoenix, AZ; 4 daughters, Michelle M. (Joel) Knerr of– Convoy, OH, Katrina M. (Curtis) Rash of Decatur, Stephanie M. (Jeff) Sanderson of Decatur; Amy M. (Tim) Weaver of Decatur; a brother, Cyril S. Des Jean of Indianapolis; a sister, Joan Laurent of Decatur; 16 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.


He was also preceded in death by 2 sisters, Florence “Dolly” Diette and Charmaine Dean.


Visitation will be from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December, 22, 2015 at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home, with reciting of the Holy Rosary at 2:30 p.m.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. in the St. Mary’s Parish Hall. Officiating will be Father David Voors and burial take place in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.


Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic School or to Family Life Care.
