Nila Penick Obituary

PENICK, NILA "JEAN" (HAND), 81, passed away peacefully Friday, May 31, 2013 at Floyd Memorial Hospital, New Albany, IN, surrounded by her family, and her husband of 58 years. She was born November 26, 1931 in London, KY, to the late John and Sudie Hand. She was a loving wife and mother. She worked with other mothers to form a support group for women with handicapped children and was the secretary of the group called Special Mother's Group. She joined the Cedar Lake Auxiliary and was a member of the Louisville Civitan Club that was the initial funder of Cedar Lake Lodge. Jean loved to get away from everyday pressures by going camping, boating, and fishing; then when we became able to do so, what she really liked-travel and touring. Her goal was to visit every state at least once...she almost made it by missing only 3 of the lower 48! Jean was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Cheryl Lynn Penick; and a sister, Jacoline Brocar. She is survived by her husband, Charles Edward Penick; daughter, Charlotte Ann Penick; son, Craig Steven Penick (Patricia); grandson, Craig Penick; sisters, Joy Swafford (Ray) and Judy Bullock (Eldon); and many nieces and nephews. Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 3, 2013 at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, with burial to follow in Louisville Memorial Gardens East. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2-8 p.m. at Highlands.
