Harry Bertelsen

Harry Bertelsen, 79, Port Orchard, WA resident and former Washington State Commandant for the Marine Corp League, died peacefully at his home on April 16, 2013. Harry was born on November 16, 1933 in Aberdeen, WA and grew up there. He was a first generation American born to Norwegian Immigrants Thorleif and Mary Bertelsen As a young boy Harry sold newspapers, and always remembered how he was impacted as a young paperboy when WW2 started. This led him to serve in the US Marine Corp during the Korean War. He served proudly and Corporal Harry Bertelsen was Honorably Discharged on April 9, 1960. Harry, became a carpenter which led him to Managing Armstrong Homes in Bremerton, WA then on to owning his own construction company B Construction. Harry married his true love Carol Bertelsen on November 9, 1956 in Montesano, WA and they made their first home in Aberdeen, WA. Later Harry built a home in Port Orchard. On May 21, 2010 Carol Passed away there. Tuesday night, Harry did the same. Harry was proud to be a Marine and later in life became the Washington State Commandant for the Marine Corp League. In 1983 Harry even had a brief part in a well known mini series, "The Winds of War" which was filmed in part in Bremerton, WA on the USS Missouri. This was quite an excitement for Harry and the family. Harry loved to fish, hunt and watch football. He was a very patriotic American and shared his love for his country and his parents country Norway with his children and grandchildren. Harry is survived by his daughters Terri Squires and Tani Zarelli Grand Children: Brynn Day, Karrie Clarke, Ashley Zarelli, Tristan Fujita, Tabatha DiRubio; 2 great grandchildren Ezra Clarke and Gabriella Zarelli and two that are on the way. He is also survived by his beloved dog Cocoa. He was preceded in death by a twin brother Bjarne Bertelsen. There will be a graveside service with Military Honors for Harry on Monday, April 22, 2013 at 1:00 PM in Fern Hill Cemetery, Aberdeen, WA. The family suggests that donations be made to The Wounded Marine Fund www.thewoundedmarinefund.com.
