Leona Wilkins

Leona Margaret Fitzgerald Wilkins, 88, transitioned into her eternal home on Tuesday, August 19, 2014. Leona was born on April 26, 1926, in Yonkers, New York to Mary Leona and Francis Fitzgerald. She was a long-time resident of Colorado Spring, spending the last several months of her life at home under the care of Interim Hospice. Leona married George Wilkins on August 20, 1950 at West Point. She is survived by her children Nancy Wilkins of Colorado springs, Stephen (Lisa) Wilkins of Colorado Springs, Sheila (David) McConnaughey of Colorado Springs, Kathleen Heberlein of Viroqua, Wisconsin, and Laura Wilkins of Chandler, Arizona. She is also survived by fifteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by George Wilkins, son Patrick, and daughter Patricia Genduso. Leona's Irish heritage shone through in her humor, determination and unyielding faith. She loved reading and learning, and so she was knowledgeable and articulate on many subjects. She was a poet and an avid gardener, a lover of beauty and birds. Leona's primary devotion was to her husband and children, all of whom she cared for with constancy, generosity and deep love. She brought laughter and warmth into her home, as well as a fiery commitment to life. She will be dearly missed. A Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 26 from 4-6 PM at Evergreen Funeral Home, 1830 E. Fountain Blvd, with a Rosary at 5:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 3122 Poinsetta Drive, on Wednesday, August 27 at 11:00 AM. Burial at Evergreen Cemetery, 1005 S. Hancock Avenue. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Interim Hospice, 1901 N. Union Blvd., Ste. 202, Colorado Springs, CO 80909. Arrangements are in the care of Evergreen Funeral Home in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
