Cheryl Jones Obituary

Cheryl “Chere” Rae Hammer Jones, 64, a resident of The Dalles, Oregon, passed away at Providence St. Vincent’s Hospital in Beaverton, Oregon on Saturday May 3, 2014, surrounded by her family and is now with Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior. Chere was born in Jackson, Minnesota, on April 1, 1950, the daughter of Ray L. and Doris (Halter) Hammer. Included in Cheryl’s family are her siblings Stacie (Hammer) Schooler and Mark Hammer. She was baptized in the Lutheran Faith, as an infant in the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Jackson, Minnesota. At age two, Chere moved with her family to The Dalles, Oregon. She was confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at Faith Lutheran Church at age 13. Chere attended Public School in The Dalles and graduated from The Dalles High School in 1968. Following graduation she spent three months in Norway visiting and getting acquainted with many relatives and cousins living there. It was a very special time in her life. Chere attended Business School in Portland, Oregon, and was also a graduate of the Gloria LaVonne School of Modeling. She did modeling in the Portland area prior to her return to The Dalles. After returning to The Dalles, she was employed in the office of Dr. Robert D. Brogan as a Dental Assistant. Later on she was employed at the Williams Clothing Store and worked there until her husband, Tom, was seriously injured in an automobile accident and she took over the Tom Jones Photography Studio. She developed a passion for photography and over the many years she considered it a privilege and a joy to work with many students for graduation photos (High School and College), weddings, High School Class Reunions, Anniversary Celebrations, baby pictures, and children of all ages for special events. Each and every opportunity to photograph was an “event” to be celebrated in her book. Chere was a “people person” and enjoyed and appreciated her family and friends to the fullest. When their children were growing up, she and Tom never missed an opportunity to be there for them for school activities and all their sports activities, whether they were “in town or out of town.” In recent years as she became a “Grandmother”, it was her joy to spend time with Haley, Dylan, Zachary, Daemon, Emily, McKenna, Nevaeh, Aby, and Tyler. Her passion for sports did not stop as she continued to support her grandchildren by being at their games. Chere was also a very loyal Portland Trail Blazer fan. Chere was active in her community, always striving for an A+ education for all of our children; ways for our community to grow and prosper; for a better life for all of our residents. Over the years Chere was active in Faith Lutheran Church as a Sunday School Teacher and Youth Leader, and then was a Sunday School Teacher and Youth Group Leader at Bethany Lutheran Church. Gardening with her children and grandchildren was a passion she thoroughly enjoyed. Spending time at the beach with all her family was always high on her list of “events” to be celebrated. She cherished her friends and had a special place in her heart for them, always enjoying to the fullest the time spent with them. Chere and Thomas (Tom) were married on November 7, 1976, at the Faith Lutheran Church. She is survived by her husband Tom; son Brandon (Julia) and children Haley and Dylan; son Tyler; daughter Courtney (Tosis) and children Daemon, Emily, and Makenna; son Parker (Natosha) and children Zachary, Aby, and Tyler; son Carter and daughter Nevaeh all of The Dalles. She is also survived by her mother, Doris Hammer of The Dalles, her sister Stacie (Hammer) Schooler of Tigard, Oregon, and brother Mark Hammer of Albany , Oregon; Uncle Loren Halter and Aunt Marge of The Dalles, Oregon, Aunt Donna of Rapid City, South Dakota, Aunt Shirley and Uncle Glen Olson of Boulder City, Nevada, Aunts Mavis Schroht of Owatonna, Minnesota, plus numerous cousins in Oregon, Minnesota, South Dakota and Washington. She was preceded in death by her father, Ray L. Hammer. Memorial Services will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church, 2323 East 12th Street, The Dalles, Oregon on Friday May 16, 2014, at 1:00 pm with Pastor Jessie Jacobsen officiating. The Mary Martha Circle of Bethany Lutheran Church will provide a luncheon at the church following the Memorial Services and all are invited and encouraged to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests the contributions be made to the “Bethany Building fund” or to their favorite charity.
