Betty Jung

Betty Lorraine Jung of Matteson passed away peacefully into the loving arms of her Savior on July 18, 2016 at the home of her daughter, Marcy, in Ignacio Colorado. She was born on August 14, 1928 in Thornton, Illinois and graduated in 1946 from Thornton High School. She was baptized, confirmed, and married by her father, Rev. Henry Meyer at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Country Club Hills. She was the daughter of Rev. Henry and Esther (Bauer) Meyer. She married Waldemar E. Jung on September 5, 1948 at St. John’s. He preceded her in death on May 8, 1998. A dedicated homemaker, Betty worked at the telephone company, Zion Lutheran School, and the Village of Matteson. She served as the village water clerk and then as the village treasurer following her retirement. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Matteson where she sang in the choir, was a member of the Ladies’ Aid and PTL, and served on the Altar Guild. To cherish Betty’s memory, she leaves four children: Nancy (Robert) Berns of Monroe, Michigan, Lawrence (Charlene) Jung of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Paul (Ann Marie) Jung of Morris, Illinois, and Marcelyn (Barb) Jung of Ignacio, Colorado. She leaves five grandchildren: Scott (Carrie) Jung, Matthew (Ingrid) Jung, Jeffrey Berns, Sandra Berns, and Alison (Ryan) Eckert, and is the proud great-grandmother of seven great granddaughters. She is survived by a sister Wilma Meyer of DeMotte, Indiana and a brother Marvin of Bartlett, Illinois. In addition to her husband, Wally, and her parents Rev. Henry and Esther Meyer, she was preceded in death by a sister Carol (Peppy) Seale. Family and friends will gather at Hirsch West End Chapel on Tuesday, July 26 followed by a service of celebration on Wednesday, July 27th at Zion Lutheran Church in Matteson, IL. Arrangements for a memorial gathering in Durango will be made for a future date in appreciation for the loving welcome Betty received from this community. Memorials may be given in her memory to Zion Lutheran Church in Matteson, IL, Caregiver Outreach at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Durango, CO, Mercy Hospice of Durango, CO, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
