Gladys M. Trower Obituary

Our beloved, Gladys Trower, passed away peacefully after a prolonged illness at Select Specialty Hospital in Newport News, Virginia on Tuesday, February 18, 2020. She was surrounded by love with her dear children, sister, and other family members at her side. She was born on December 2, 1937 to the late Cleveland and Rosie Baines. Mrs. Trower was a hardworking homemaker. To help provide for her family, she worked for years in canning at the Kane Miller Corporation, Perdue Farms, and as a housekeeper at the Anchor Motel. An Eastern Shore of Virginia native, Mrs. Trower was a lifelong member of New Allen Memorial A.M.E. Church, where she served as a stewardess, usher, and missionary. She was a devoted wife and mother. Over the years, Mrs. Trower enjoyed working in her church, sewing, crocheting, and gardening, growing vegetables and beautiful flowers. She was always concerned with the needs of others and praying for her family. One of her finest roles was creating lasting memories through long talks on the phone and spending time with her family, which brought moments of great laughter, joy, strength, and encouragement. Her life inspires us to enjoy life, persevere through life’s challenges, and trust in God. She is survived by: her loving husband, William T. Trower: children, Margaret Sample (Clarence) of Portsmouth, VA, Hughland Ivey Jr. (Ann) of Hampton, VA, Lawrence Ivey (Dorothy) of Greenbush, VA, Horace Smaw, Jr. (Tammy) of Cedar Hill, TX and Shirley Hudson (Marvin) of Spout Spring, VA; stepchildren: Gregory Trower of Bloxom, VA and Cynthia Bull (James) of Parksley, VA; siblings: Christine Reed (Levin-deceased) of Spring Hill, FL, Margaret Sample (Frederick) of Portsmouth, VA, Robert Baines (Ernestine) of Norfolk, VA and Paul Baines (Loretta-deceased) of Suffolk, VA, and many beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Mrs. Trower was predeceased by: two granddaughters, Rebecca Hudson of Hampton, VA and Brittney Austin of Greenbush, VA; her parents, Cleveland Baines and Rosa Baines of Exmore, VA; husbands, Horace Lee Smaw and Henry Roselle of Virginia; her brother, Milton Baines of Portsmouth, VA, and half-brothers, Cleveland Baines, Jr. and Samuel Giddens of Virginia. LOVINGLY SUBMITTED ~ THE FAMILY
