Tony Griffin Brockville, Ontario Obituary

Tony Griffin

Born Richard Anthony Holt "Tony" Griffin, November 2, 1924 in Paris, France; died at the age of 86 on May 23, 2011 at Kingston General Hospital. Retired O.P.P. Detective Staff Sergeant. Loving husband and partner through thick and thin to Jean Winifred Griffin (Payne) for 63 years. Proud father to David (Tammy Greaves), Christopher (Carmela) and Carol. Grandfather to Matthew, Ryan, Daniel, Richard, Kyle and Terissa. Tony emigrated to Canada from Great Britain in 1956, dragging Jean away from her family and friends to set a new course on life in a promised land. Through sheer determination and several false starts, Tony eventually started a new career as an OPP officer, and soon began raising a family in Burlington, Ontario. An avid sailor, Tony was charter member (1975), and later Commodore of the Burlington Sailing and Boating Club. After retiring from the OPP in 1983 and moving to Brockville in 1990, Tony became an active member in the community of Brockville with The Probus Club and the Brockville Rotary Club, and was honoured as a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary in 2007. Tony loved his family, friends, community and adopted country. Occasionally incorrigible and always one to share a story and a smile, Tony embraced life, was always willing to lend a hand and dispense advice, and was never one to shy away from hard work or any challenge thrown his way. He was a good friend and neighbour to many wonderful people over the years, and admired for his determination and irrepressible spirit, which were a source of inspiration in his final days. Our thanks to the compassionate caregivers and medical staff at the Brockville General Hospital and Kingston General Hospital for all their efforts and support. Friends are invited to join with Jean and our family as we share stories and fond memories in a celebration of Tony's life, to be held on Saturday, May 28 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at the Irvine Memorial Chapel and Reception Centre at Roselawn Memorial Gardens - 2451 Maitland Road, Maitland. Casual attire would be welcomed. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation.
