Priscilla Howard Obituary

Priscilla Ann Howard transitioned into eternity on February 10, 2020 at the age of 78. Priscilla Ann Howard is a native of Boston, Massachusetts. She is a graduate of Roxbury Memorial High School for Girls of Boston and completed coursework at Boston University. She later trained in Newark, New Jersey and was recruited as an IBM operator for Prudentials Northeastern Home Office in Boston. She was promoted to their Human Resources Department as an interviewer and recruiter. She wrote the script and was the consultant for a recruitment film used by Prudential to prepare senior high school students for job interviews entitled "The Pru and You: A Job Interview." She was employed with the company for fifteen years. When her husband, Rev. Dr. William Gerald Howard accepted the call to Pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Plainfield, NJ she was offered a position as Program Director for the YWCA of Plainfield. At a workshop she was conducting for women within the community, a representative of the Girl Scouts approached her about applying for a position. She was hired as a Field Director and Outreach Coordinator for the Washington Rock Girl Scout Council in Westfield, NJ where she remained for ten years. In 1992, she assumed the position as Assistant Director of Membership and Marketing for the Greater New York Girl Scout Council. As Assistant Director, she was accountable for 2,000 adult volunteers and 10,000 girl members. She was cited by the National Safety Council for developing a safety program for elementary school age children which was implemented in schools throughout Union County. Within the same council she was promoted to Director of Membership (Manhattan) & Special Projects. In 1997, she assumed the position of Director of Membership in Montclair, NJ for the Girl Scout Council of Greater Essex and Hudson Counties. In 2001, she was requested to return to the Greater New York Girl Scout Council, where she became the Director of Volunteers and retired after many years of service in 2003. In addition to her many responsibilities she was asked to become a Member of the Hudson County Human Relations Commission and later served in the same capacity for the City of Plainfield. Her memberships included the Plainfield Network Adolescent Services, Union County Child Protection Council, National Urban League, The National Council of Negro Women, Human Relations Commission of NJ and the Human Relations Commission of Massachusetts. She worked harmoniously within the Youth Department as the Assistant Director of the Youth Church and was affectionately known among the Calvary family as the "Songbird of the East". She was a member of the Gospel Choir and established the Praise and Worship Ministry called Total Praise. Sister Howard was the founder and director of "My Sisters Keeper", a holistic ministry for women in Plainfield and surrounding communities. She was an integral part of the teaching staff of the Calvary Baptist Church Bible Learning Center and the New Members Ministry. She continued to work along with her husband (Rev. Dr. William Gerald Howard) at Galilee Baptist Church in Trenton, NJ. She became the coordinator of Galilees Ruth and Naomi Ministry, a sister to sister Christian Support Group. Priscilla Ann Howard is pre-deceased by her husband, Rev. Dr. William Gerald Howard of 54 years. She is survived by her daughter, Rev. Tene Howard; her aunt, Helen L. Mosely Matthews of Evans, Georgia; her cousin, Eleanor L. Matthews of Augusta, Georgia; her cousin, Edgar L. Matthews III of Martinez, Georgia; her sister-in-law, Ethel Howard Williams of San Diego, California; her brothers-in-law, John Arthur Howard, Stanley Donald Howard and Warren Kenneth Howard of Boston, Massachusetts and a host of family and friends. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 22, 10:00 AM at Calvary Baptist Church, 324 Monroe Avenue, Plainfield. Friends may call at the church from 9:00 AM until time of service.
