COBDEN – Joyce Pease Nelson, 74, of Cobden, passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at Integrity Healthcare of Cobden. Joyce was born on February 7, 1946 to Laurel and Marian (Ellis) Pease in Mitchell, South Dakota. Joyce started playing violin at ten years old. She studied music performance and education at Mount Union College, University of Iowa, SIU Edwardsville, and TERI in Matsumoto, Japan. Joyce performed with the North Carolina Symphony, Omaha Symphony, Music Company Theater in Portland, Oregon, and Huntsville Symphony Orchestra. She taught at Vancouver Academy of Music in British Columbia, Canada, Fine Arts for Youth in Oregon, Suzuki Institute of Dallas Texas, Symphony School in Huntsville, Alabama, and Talent Education School of Southern Illinois (TESSI) in Carbondale. Joyce started teaching the Suzuki Method in 1969. She studied under John Kendall and Shinichi Suzuki. Joyce specialized Talent Education programs for special needs students and at-risk students in public schools. Joyce was a member of Mu Phi Epsilon of the Alliance, Ohio Chapter. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Stabler of Evanston; brother Warren Pease, of Dundee, OR; sister, Jean (Paul) Jewell of Ruidoso, NM; and former husbands, Jerry and Daniel. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration at www.theaftd.org.
