Charlotte E. Johnson, a longtime area resident and community activist entered into eternal rest on Friday April 15, 2016 at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence. She was 85. One of ten children born to the late Joseph and Irene Ferguson Wright, she entered this world on December 18, 1930 in N.Y.C. She married William Johnson on August 13, 1967 in N.Y.C. He predeceased her on February 15, 1996. Charlotte was an independent and enterprising woman who owned and operated Day Out Employment Services in Orange County. She was well known for encouraging, empowering and advocating for underemployed people. She worked for the Regional Economic Community Action Program (RECAP). She served on the Orange County Human Rights Commission, and The Private Industry Council. She was also involved with the Hudson Valley Opportunities Industrial Center, (HVOIC) and received the Minority Women’s Business Council Award for twenty-five years of dedicated service. She was the first African American woman to own and operate a business in Goshen, NY. She was committed to the advancement of uplifting minority individuals in the pursuit of achieving their own professional success. Charlotte is survived by her two sons: Joseph and Claude Williams of NY; four daughters: Irene Ferguson (Lewis) of Washington, Patricia Lassiter (Anthony) of Beacon, NY, Maureen Nelson, Sacramento, CA, and Charlene “Leslie” Jackson of Port Jervis, NY; also surviving are four brothers: James Wright (Dolores) of Florida, Charles Wright (Zarita) of Florida, Rudolph (Rudy) Wright, of Middletown, NY, and David Wright (Amy) of Campbell Hall, NY; two sisters: Peggy Barnes of Middletown, NY, and Gene Caldwell of Arizona. Also left to grieve, is her dear friend, Mattie Bass. She was loved by and blessed to be a Grandmother to "20" grandchildren, and a Great-Grandmother to "35" great-grandchildren plus many, many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 21st at Seventh Day Adventist Church, 70 Highland Ave, Middletown, NY from 10 to 11 a.m. with a Funeral Service of Remembrance immediately at 11 a.m. Burial services will follow at the family plot in Wallkill Cemetery. The location for the re-past will be announced. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations in Charlotte’s name may be made to Kaplan Family Hospice Residence of Orange and Sullivan Counties, 1 Sunrise Lane, Newburgh, NY 12550. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home Inc., 130 Highland Avenue Middletown, NY. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 21st at Seventh Day Adventist Church, 70 Highland Ave, Middletown, NY from 10 to 11 a.m. with a Funeral Service of Remembrance immediately at 11 a.m. Burial services will follow at the family plot in Wallkill Cemetery. The location for the re-past will be announced.
