Gilbert Trejo

“Coach” Gilbert Brady Trejo, a United States Marine Veteran of World War II, passed away on February 26, 2017, in Litchfield Park, Arizona. Gilbert married Gloria in 1949 and recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. Over the years, their lives were blessed with three children: Debbie (Nick), Mark and Patrick (Maureen), and three grandchildren: Anthony, Nicholas and Patrick Jr. Born in Phoenix, Gilbert graduated from Phoenix Union High School and Arizona State University where he lettered in baseball and basketball. During the early 1950’s Gilbert played professional baseball and ended his career in the New York Yankee Organization. Gilbert began teaching and coaching during the mid-1950’s at West High School, Camelback High School, Carl Hayden High School and finally at Maryvale High School where he guided the baseball program to two state championships and 11 league championships. In 2000, The Phoenix Union High School District renamed the Maryvale High School baseball field to Gil Trejo Field. Gilbert entered the Inaugural Arizona Coaches Hall of Fame in 1984 and the Inaugural Phoenix Union High School District Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. Gilbert enjoyed his vacations in San Diego with family and many friends. He was a simple man who worked all his life. He was firm, dedicated to his beliefs and raised his children to be the same. He touched many lives in so many positive ways. His personality and easy going attitude was what made him so popular with so many people. He will be forever missed and has left behind a great legacy of family, values and work for all to reflect and admire. A small niche-side service will be held at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery in Phoenix, AZ, on Tuesday March 7th at 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation be made to Sanctuary Hospice LLC; 13845 N Northsight Blvd #101,;Scottsdale, AZ 85260 Arrangements have been made through Regency Mortuary in Sun City, AZ.
