Doris was born Nov 8, 1925 in Golconda, Illinois to the Hillis and Lula Whiteside Aly.
She grew up in Golconda, completing her elementary and high school work in 1942. She then
enrolled in the Missouri Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis. This was followed
several years later with a degree in Public Health Nursing from Peabody College in Nashville,
TN.
Doris first married S. E. Herl, Jr and had a daughter, Martha and a son, William. She was
employed by the Quadric-County Health Dept as the nurse for Pope County for 20+ years. She
then set up an onsite medical department for Olin Corporation near Marion, IL. She stayed with
Olin until she retired in 1988. After a 5 year stint of setting up onsite medical units for other
large companies, she then moved to St. Petersburg, FL to be near her Brother, Russell. It was
in St. Petersburg that she met and married R. Hugh Hancock - the light and love of her life. She
and Hugh built a home in Spring Hill, FL where they lived until Hugh’s passing in 2010.
Following Hugh’s passing, Doris relocated eventually to the Mt. Dora, FL area.
Doris was a lifelong Christian, having become a member of the Golconda First Methodist
Church at age 15. She continued to support this church financially until the time of her death. It
had become very important to her to see that the building and its’ surroundings were well kept.
Doris also helped with the care of Hugh’s nephew and name sake, Hugh Allen Hancock who
suffers from end-stage Parkinson’s disease. Doris gave to many charitable causes as helping
others in need was part of her true nature. She had a very outgoing personality, and having
grown up during the depression, always had a heartfelt desire to help others in need. She
always said, “It’s a very rewarding thing to be able to help others as we go through our own
lives.”
Doris was predeceased by her siblings, Zona Phillips of Paducah, KY, Francis Taylor of
Carbondale, IL , and Russell Aly of St. Petersburg, FL. Doris is survived by her children as well
as her Nephew, Thomas Baker and her Niece, Sherrie Aly. Doris ashes will be interred in
