Robert Vernon Smith

SMITH, Robert Vernon – of Farwell formerly of Clio, age 95, died Monday, December 30, 2019 at Coleman Fields Assisted Living in Coleman, Michigan. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, January 3, 2020 at the O’Guinn Family Funeral Home in Clio. The family will receive visitors on Thursday, January 2, 2020 from 12-2 and 4-7 PM and on Friday from 10AM until time of service at 11AM at O’Guinn Family Funeral Home. A Masonic Service will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2020 at 6:00 PM. Memorial contributions can be made to the Clio VFW Post #1452, Flushing Masonic Lodge #223 or the Clio Masonic Lodge # 205. Robert was born October 11, 1924 in Flint, Michigan to the late Robert and Beulah (Hill) Smith. He grew up in the Beecher area and graduated from Beecher High School with the class of 1942. Robert also attended the General Motors Institute and Flint Junior College. He served his country in the US Marine Corp during WWII with the 5th Division VMF 314 in the Pacific Theater. Robert married Lerayne Darby on May 10, 1944 in Kinston, North Carolina and she preceded him in death on November 5, 2017. Prior to his retirement in 1982 he worked for GM-AC Spark Plug as a General Supervisor Plant Engineering with 40 years of service. He resided in the Clio area for 31 years and retired to Northport, Florida for 25 years. Robert then moved to Farwell, Michigan for the past 4 years to be with his family. He was a lifetime member of the Flushing Masonic Lodge # 223 and also a member of the Genesee County Sheriff’s Posse. Robert was a Boy Scout, raised Morgan show horses, and was a member of the 4-H Club. He also was a part time farmer and loved to go fishing in Au Gres, Michigan. Robert played trombone in the AC Band and the Salvation Army Band. However, his greatest joy in life was spending time with his family at their summer cottage in Au Gres, Michigan Surviving are: Children, Robert Smith, Linda (Robert) Elliott, Sue Smith, Janet (Chris) Mowl, Tim Smith; Grandchildren, Robert (Leah) Elliott, Steven Elliott, Kirsten Smith, Robert Smith, Brian Fredericks, Daniel (Courtnie) Fredericks; Great Grandchildren, Alexandria Elliott, Zachary Elliott. He was preceded in death by his Parents; Wife, Lerayne Smith; Sisters, Eleanor (Gene) Ploucha, Nadine Brown.
