Jennette Singleton

Born on July 25, 1934, in Charlotte, North Carolina, Jenny grew up on a family farm alongside her four siblings, Zeke, Morry, John, and Beegie. She attended Myers Park High School before continuing her education at Converse College and the University of Alabama. Known for her independent spirit even at a young age, Jenny once declined to sign the university’s honor code, joking that she didn’t want the responsibility of reporting others. The story became one she loved to tell and perfectly reflected her wit and strong sense of self.

While attending Converse college, she formed lifelong friendships with a group of women she affectionately called the “Converse girls.” It was also at Converse that she met her future husband, Rudolph Singleton, after being introduced by her older brother, Zeke.

After graduating, Jenny returned to Charlotte, where she worked for an interior designer while Rudolph served in the Army. The two later married and settled in Fayetteville, where they soon welcomed their daughter, Scott, followed by their son, Grant. While living in Fayetteville, Jenny worked as a social worker and later became co-owner of The Town Shop, a women’s boutique. Together, they built a life centered on family, friendship, and hospitality.

Their home on Skye Drive became a true gathering place, known for its open door, warm welcome, and countless celebrations. Garden club meetings, bridge nights, birthdays, and dinners were all hosted with ease, bringing people together time and time again. Jenny’s eye for detail paired perfectly with Rudy’s natural charisma, creating an atmosphere that made everyone feel at home.

In Jenny’s own words, “I love to have given a party.” She was an active member of several local clubs, including the Tartan Club, and found genuine joy in connecting with others.

Faith was an important part of Jenny’s life. She and Rudolph were longtime members of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, where Rudolph taught an adult Sunday school class for many years. Her relationship with God was a steady and guiding presence throughout her life, especially as a faithful wife, selfless mother, and devoted grandmother.

Jenny never met a stranger. She was known for her kindness, her ability to truly listen, and her quick wit. Her dry sense of humor and perfectly timed one-liners brought laughter to those around her, a trait she carried with her throughout her life.

Jenny and Rudy made it a priority to nurture their relationship through their shared love of travel. Together, they explored the world, from scuba diving in the Galápagos Islands to visiting Africa multiple times, and traveling to places such as Italy, China, France, and Australia. She passed down this love of travel to her grandchildren, leaving them with a lasting sense of wonder and appreciation for new experiences. No matter how many places they visited, Jenny always held a special place in her heart for Murrells Inlet.

Summers spent in Murrells Inlet and Topsail became cherished traditions, where she created lasting memories with her children and grandchildren, who lovingly called her “Sweets.” She was happiest on a screened in porch, book in hand, surrounded by wet bathing suits, one too many dogs, and family you could hear from many houses down. Whether she was standing on the pier in her straw hat after a long swim, effortlessly guiding a boat into place, or cooking in her kitchen, Jenny brought a quiet confidence and grace to everything she did.

She loved Cedar Hall and treasured time spent with her family there. Jenny was the heart of her family, a true matriarch who showed up when it mattered most. Her presence was steady, kind, and deeply genuine. Jenny was preceded in death by her son, Grant Singleton, and her daughter, Scott Gatch.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 67 years, Rudolph Singleton; her sister, Beegie Caviness; her daughter-in-law, Sebrell Singleton; and her grandchildren, Sebrell Montague (HL), Lee Singleton (Bridget), and Jenny Cowan (John).

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy and Hall Johnston, and her brothers, Zeke Johnston, Morry Johnston, and John Johnston.

Jenny was a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, and a true role model. She played many roles and showed up for so many, even those she did not know. Her life was defined by her love for people, her generosity, and the way she made others feel seen and welcomed. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to her caregivers, Q, Cindy, Dean, Gloria, Dottie, Kay, and Sarah, as well as Tina and Bee from hospice, and Lacy, her physical therapist, for their kindness, compassion, and the care they provided.

A graveside service will be held at Cross Creek Cemetery on April 15 at 1:00 PM. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Snyder Memorial Baptist Church Generations Fund.
