Margaret, known to many as Margie, died on January 24, 2026, after a short stay at Hotel Dieu Shaver. Margie was just shy of her 99th birthday having been born on March 29, 1927. While healthy, happy, bright and full of life for most of her life the last number of months were consumed by cancer that took its toll on her body and her spirit.

Margie was the loving wife to Frank (d.2013). Married in July 1950, at the time of his death, they had been married for 62 years.

She was a caring and supportive mom to Gerry (Elizabeth), Ken (Violet) and Kathleen (Ron); grandma to Steven (Carol), Christopher (Jillian), Joel (Danielle) Steingart, Emma (Kyle) and Jacob Giesbrecht; great grandma to Marcus, Ria, Rowan, Maya, Madelyn and Evelyn.

Margie was the eldest daughter of five children born to Gertrude and Peter Neufeld. Margie was predeceased by her parents and sisters Lena Litke and Betty Penner, and brother Peter. Margie is survived by her brother Cornie and his wife Lillian, sister-in-law Anne Neufeld, and many, many nieces and nephews all who were so special to her.

Margie was born in Rosenfeld, Manitoba, then moved to Foxwarren, Manitoba. At the age of 10, the family moved to Ontario, initially farming on Point Pelee, then moving to Jordan Station and eventually to St. Catharines.

During her lifetime she held many paid employment jobs, including Monarch Knitting Company, Boese Canning Factory, Martin’s Farm in Virgil, the Driving Range in St. Catharines, and various vineyards. In many of her jobs she was promoted to a manager position, as she was a quick learner, trustworthy, reliable, and a hard worker.

Volunteering was very important to her, and she gave many hours and years of service to: her church Home Mission Circle, including time as President; the Christian Benefit Shop from 1980- 2020, twenty of those years as the manager; at Silver Lake Mennonite Camp for numerous summers as cook; and in the kitchen for the annual “Silver Lake Smorg” fundraiser.

Her greatest love beyond her employment and volunteering was being a homemaker, as family was everything to her - as she was to her entire family. She was a very active participant in her family’s lives, always finding a reason to have gatherings, events to provide cooking and baking, holidays to share quilts and socks, and later providing childcare for her grandchildren. All the grandchildren (impatiently) waited their turn for her to rub their back during an afternoon visit. She continued to be an integral part of all her great-grandchildren’s lives. She proudly and happily attended concerts, rowing regattas, basketball games, or swinging on a swing.

Margie loved being able to gather with others and rarely turned down a visit. Margie was a charter member at St. Catharines United Mennonite Church (now Linwell Church). Church life was important to her, and she especially liked to take the opportunity to welcome younger people and newcomers into the fold. Over the years, many people were welcomed into Margie and Frank’s home for a meal or a toboggan ride in their backyard during the time they lived on Queenston Rd. Together they moved to Heidelberg Village, over 20 years ago. Margie appreciated the many good friends that they made while living there, enjoying all the opportunities to participate in activities such as euchre, bocce ball, bingo, Thursday evening barbeques and Tuesday morning coffee breaks. Margie was known to many for her yeast baking, and it was always a welcome contribution at any of their gatherings.

Visitation will be on January 30th, 2026, from 10:00 - 11:30 am at Linwell Church. Funeral service will follow at 11:30. A private family committal service will be held separately.

At Margie’s request memorial donations would be welcome in lieu of flowers at Linwell Church or Silver Lake Mennonite Camp.
