<p>With heavy hearts, we announce the unexpected passing of John Carter III, age 84, of Gray, TN. On November 5, 2025, he was welcomed into the loving arms of his Savior, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, and a life lived with quiet purpose.</p><p><br></p><p>John proudly served his country in the United States Army, carrying with him a spirit of honor, humility, and dedication that reflected his deeply rooted faith. He lived each day grounded in God’s grace, seeking to serve others with kindness and integrity.</p><p><br></p><p>A lifelong learner, he believed that God’s creation was full of wonderful things to be discovered. He was always teaching himself something new-picking up skills, exploring ideas, or challenging himself to grow. His curiosity was a reflection of his belief that life is a gift meant to be explored and appreciated.</p><p><br></p><p>He found joy in the simple, beautiful parts of the world around him. He found God’s presence in nature. Whether kayaking on still waters, walking through the woods, or listening to the wind stir the treetops, he felt close to the Lord in the beauty around him. A gifted craftsman, he delighted in working with wood, creating pieces with his hands. He also loved bird watching, often pausing to admire and study the small wonders God placed in front of him.</p><p><br></p><p>More than anything, John cherished the family God entrusted to him. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who led his family not only with gentleness, but with faith and steadfast love. His family will forever remember the peace he carried, the wisdom he shared, and the way he made each of them feel treasured.</p><p><br></p><p>John is preceded in death by his parents, John and Gennell (Elliott) Carter; his infant son, David Lawrence Carter; and his brothers Jimmy, Ricky, and Randy Carter.</p><p><br></p><p>He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Phyllis Carter; his son, John Carter; and his daughters, Cheryl (Allen) George and Laura Spivey. He is also survived by his brothers Billy (Joan) Carter and Freddie (Patti) Carter. John leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Brittany (Chris) Ivanich, Matthew (Lauren) George, Chelsea (Eric) Baker, Alex Spivey, and David George. He was blessed with five great-grandchildren—Charlee, Poppy, Revere, and Adelyn—and one precious great-granddaughter on the way, along with several nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.</p><p><br></p><p>The memories he leaves with us will continue to shine brightly, reflecting a life shaped by deep faith, steadfast devotion, and a heartfelt appreciation for all of God’s creation.</p><p><br></p><p>He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.</p><p><br></p><p>The family will receive friends Wednesday, November 12, 2025, from 11:00am until 12:00pm in the funeral home chapel.</p><p><br></p><p>A Celebration of Life Service will begin at 12:00pm with Chris Ivanich officiating.</p><p><br></p><p>Graveside Service will follow at 1:00pm at Oak Hill Memorial Park in Section A.</p><p><br></p><p>In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity of your choice.</p><p><br></p><p>To share memories and condolences with the family please visit www.oakhillfh.com</p><p><br></p><p>The care of John Carter III and his family have been entrusted to the staff of Oak Hill Funeral & Cremation Services.</p><p><br></p>
