<p>Edith Henderson Ray, 99 years young, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, in the comfort of her home in Springfield on August 6, 2025. Born in Syracuse, New York, on January 5, 1926, raised in Brandon VT. Edith was the beloved daughter of the late Raymond Henderson and Lula D. Henderson (Stewart). She was predeceased by her devoted husband, of 72 years, Willie B. Ray, who passed away in 2020. Three brothers; James, Herbert, and Bernard, and two sisters; Edna Gray and Ella Jane Disco. Edith dedicated much of her life to serving the community, she was a past president of the Springfield branch NAACP and even made her family life members. She was also a member of the Carl L. Talbot VFW Post #6189 and a longtime choir member of the Freedom Choir of Springfield. She also belonged to several church groups at Christ Church Cathedral. At her church, she was involved in UTO, United Thank Offering, and introduced “Undie Sunday”. This is a day where they collect clean underwear for men at the Springfield Rescue Mission. A day that still continues. Her hobbies included doing jigsaw puzzles, oil painting, doing ceramics, and she loved writing letters. Edith was also a world traveler. Her kindness, wisdom, and dedication left a lasting impact on many. She is survived by her three children; Delphine Williams and her husband Haven, of Springfield, Price (Van) Ray of Springfield, and Monique Ray-Burwell and her husband John of Springfield; and a sister Clotield Andrews as well as her eight cherished grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A wake will be held on Thursday, August 14, 2025, from 6 to 8 PM at the Byron Keenan Funeral Home and Cremation Tribute Center, located at 1858 Allen Street in Springfield. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 15, 2025, at Christ Church Cathedral, 35 Chestnut Street in Springfield, with burial to follow at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Edith’s legacy of love, compassion, and dedication will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.</p><p><br></p><p><br></p>
