<p><p>Phyllis L. Jones<br> May 12, 1931 - August 3, 2025</p> <p>Phyllis Rae Liverman Jones, 94, of Columbia, went to be with the Lord, August 3, 2025, at Windsor House, Windsor, NC, after a long battle with dementia. </p> <p>Phyllis was born in Columbia, NC on May 12, 1931, to the late Lonnie & Thelma Liverman. Her step-father Clyde Hardison, also preceded her in death. She was married to Larry Everett Jones, Sr, for sixty-eight years before he passed away in 2019. As an only child, she gained lots of brothers and sisters when she married Larry, and she loved every one of them dearly!</p> <p>Phyllis briefly worked with the Corps of Engineers in Norfolk, VA, before returning to Tyrrell County. There, she and Larry opened the county's first self-service grocery store—Larry's General Merchandise—which served as a cornerstone of the community for many years.</p> <p>A devoted member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, she loved playing bridge and could often be found crocheting, reading a book, or enjoying her favorite snack: a Milky Way with a Coca-Cola. She was also a founding member of the Tyrrellinean Club, a local women's organization focused on civic enhancement of the community.</p> <p>Phyllis loved her family with fierce devotion and was always everyone's biggest cheerleader. Surviving are two sons, Larry E. "Chip" Jones Jr. (Lynn), of Wilmington, and Carl E. Jones (Elaine) of Columbia. One daughter, Chris Jones Carson (Jacky) of Columbia. She was affectionately known to her grandchildren as either "Nonnie" or "Grammy" and they were her heart and joy, Larry E. "Tripp" Jones, III (Brooke) & Hunter Jones (Kerri), all of Wilmington; Andy Jones (Brooke) & Brian Carson (Katie), all of Columbia; Megan Jones McLaughlin (Scott) of Zebulon; Haley Carson Braddock (Ryan) of Winterville; thirteen great-grandchildren; Larry E. "Cade" Jones IV, Jaxon Jones, Ella Jones, Lyla Jones, Dawson Jones, Crewe Jones, Lanie Jones, Allie Grace McLaughlin, Graham McLaughlin, Elody Jones, Annabelle Carson, Ava Carson, & Lonni Braddock. </p> <p>Phyllis's legacy is one of love, strength, and quiet service— she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.</p> <p>A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, August 9th at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. Visitation will follow immediately after the service. Rev. Allison Lancaster will officiate.
