Steven Abbey

Remembered fondly for his many acts of kindness, Steven John Abbey passed away as he lived—peacefully—on Friday, February 28, 2025, in The Woodlands, Texas.

The fourth and youngest child of Floyd and Mary (Gillis) Abbey, Steve was born in Detroit, Michigan. His boyhood was filled with holiday and communion gatherings with siblings and cousins. He discovered baseball, pizza, and cars, which became lifelong interests.

Graduating from Henry Ford High School, Steve went on to attend Wayne State University, receiving a degree in geography with an emphasis in cartography. Later, he earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from South Texas College of Law.

During his early career, Steve worked as a mapmaker in Detroit and Columbus, Ohio, before accepting a position in Houston. He enjoyed a long and successful career with Anadarko Petroleum as Manager of Regulatory Affairs. His position allowed him to travel widely for business and pleasure. Exploring ecosystems across the country and internationally, Steve made many friends along the way who described him as easy to be with and always ready to lend a hand.

With a passion for nature, music, the written word, and equity, Steve was a dedicated volunteer and supporter of many charitable organizations. He built houses with Habitat for Humanity; uncovered artifacts with Earth Watch; packed boxes at the food bank; planted trees for Arbor Day; stocked tables for the library book sale, and documented bird and butterfly populations.

An excellent sous chef, Steve was famous for his guacamole, steelhead trout, and rosemary whipped sweet potatoes. His good conversation and listening ear will be missed at many dining tables.

Steve was predeceased by his parents and brother, James Abbey; and recently followed in death by his brother, Robert Abbey. He is survived by his sister, Karen Nuckolls (Larry); and loving partner of nine years, Lucinda Valdes.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center or Montgomery County Food Bank.

A celebration of life will be held on August 14, 2025 at 10:30am EST at Nie Funeral Home, 3767 W. Liberty Rd., Ann Arbor, MI 48103. It was written on the wings of butterflies.—Kjell B. Sandved
