Louis Toti

Louis P. Toti was born on August 25, 1950, in Brooklyn, New York, to Natalie (“Lily”) Toti (nee Fortini) and Louis Toti. He had an older sister, Theresa, who became Theresa Molloy. He graduated from John Jay High School and earned college credits in accounting.

Louie had an incredibly strong work ethic. For nearly forty years, he worked as a mechanic for the U.S. Postal Service and was a proud member of the American Postal Workers Union, Brooklyn Local. When he retired from the post office, he obtained a commercial driver’s license and worked as a school bus driver for WE Transport for more than a decade.

On April 22, 1972, Louie married Pietrina (“Trina”) Polizzi, the love of his life. At first, they lived in the Gravesend neighborhood of Brooklyn, where they had two daughters, Stephanie and Jennifer. In 1981, the family moved to a house in North Lynbrook, New York, where Louie and Trina have lived ever since. A devoted family man, Louie was an amazing husband, father, and later grandfather. He loved spending time with his family, who gathered at his house for dinner nearly every Sunday. In recent years, nothing brought Louie more joy than hanging out with his twin granddaughters, Emma and Lily, who called him Pop-Pop. They taught him how to play Barbies, and he taught them how to play chess. They also enjoyed playing Uno, watching cartoons together, and chasing each other around the backyard swimming pool that was Louie’s labor of love.

Louie loved to build things and fix things, and he was always engaged in some kind of home improvement project. He taught his daughters more than they ever wanted to know about building decks, patching drywall, and similar pursuits. He really enjoyed throwing parties at home for holidays, birthdays, and other special occasions, and he loved to host backyard barbeques in the summer. One of his favorite pastimes was playing in the pool with his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, who were all both terrified and delighted when he would dunk them. Louie loved food, and he was fortunate to marry an excellent cook. Every time Louie and Trina hosted a party, Louie would insist that they prepare twice as much food as necessary in case there were unexpected guests or people were just really hungry that day.

Louie inherited a love of animals—especially cats—from his mother and passed it on to his daughters. Growing up, he adored Tiger Boy and Tiger Girl, and later his family cats Cindy, Mittens, Hamlet, and Tabitha. He bottle-fed Mittens, the runt of the litter who was abandoned by her mother, until she was big enough to eat solid food. He also took care of strays, including at the bus yard, where he helped his friend Phil rescue kittens. One of those was an adorable gray and white ball of fluff (“Sophie”) who he gave to his daughter, Stephanie.

Louie was a big sports fan and rooted for all the New York sports teams. But his favorite, by far, was the New York Mets. It is not easy being a Mets’ fan, and Louie would sometimes curse the team and vow that he was never going to watch them again. But the next day, he would be back on the couch, watching the game, trying to will them to victory. He accompanied his granddaughters to their first Mets’ game when they were just a few months old.

Louie was a kind and generous man who worked hard his whole life and valued family and friends above all else. He died on June 28, 2025, following complications from surgery and a long hospitalization. His legacy is a close-knit family who will love him, miss him, and be inspired by the example he set for the rest of their lives. He is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Trina Toti; his daughters, Stephanie Toti and Jennifer Guismondi; his son-in-law, Jose Guismondi; his granddaughters, Emma and Lily Guismondi; his cousin and brother-in-law, Dominic Troise, Jr.; his sister-in-law, Roseanne Troise; and many nieces and nephews who adored him.

Memorial Contributions may be made to: The Humane Society of New York

humanesociety.org
