Joan Campbell Murphy, 92, of Toms River, NJ, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 27, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend to all who knew her. She was born in Trenton, NJ on May 23, 1933. She attended Immaculate Conception Grammar School, and graduated from Cathedral Girls High School in 1950.

Joan was known for her philanthropic heart and generosity. She volunteered in many organizations, especially at St. Joseph’s Parish and School. She was the Vice Regent of the Catholic Daughters of America and served as the President of the Rosary Altar Society in addition to serving as Eucharistic Minister at St. Joseph’s Church. She loved volunteering while her children were in school. After passing out too much hot lunch to the older boys she was lovingly moved to milk and ice cream duty. She volunteered for the St. Joe’s Angels Pop Warner Football Organization alongside her husband Bill and best friend Alice Bontempo. In addition to church and school volunteerism, she served on the Ocean County Election Board. Joan enjoyed politics and was proud to work on the Jack Kennedy Presidential Campaign, introducing Eunice Kennedy Shriver to 1200 people at the Riverton Country Club. With a strong connection to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, she launched Daisy Day which raised money for the hospital, forming the first auxiliary in the area. Due to so many donations, the auxiliary was able to purchase neonatal beds for the intensive care unit. Joan was very active all of her life. Up until her late eighties, she served on the Board of Directors for the Riverview Condo Association where she lived on the Toms River for 27 years.

After having her children, and while some of her children were also in college, Joan went back to school to become a Registered Nurse and also obtained specialized certifications in CRRN and CCM. She graduated with her RN from Ocean County College at the age of 50 in 1983. She was known as “Mother Murphy” to all the young nursing students who were very impressed when she did the mile run alongside them. This was one of her proudest accomplishments. Early in her career, she worked as a floor nurse at Kimball Medical Center, an oncology nurse, and an Ocean County Public Health nurse. She worked for many years at Health South Rehabilitation Hospital until retirement.

Joan is reunited in Heaven with her husband Bill of 66 years, her son Trip and his beloved animals, and her infant daughter Kerry. She will also join her parents Jack and Rose (nee Wolfe) Campbell; as well as her brothers Jack, Paul, and Robert Campbell; and her sister Rosemarie Bruno.

Joan will forever be held in the hearts of her family: Erin Murphy (and Anita) of Bridgeville, DE; Sean Murphy (and Karen) of Marblehead, MA; Megin Ward (and Dick) of Paris, ME; Hugh Murphy (and Meghan) of Randolph, NJ.
