Georgios Markoulakis

On Friday, June 20, 2025, Georgios G. Markoulakis, age 86, fell asleep in the Lord. Georgios was a proud Cretan but an even prouder American. He was born in Vatolakkos, Crete, to Gregory and Georgia Markoulakis on March 1, 1939, and was the youngest brother to John and Angelo. By the time Georgios was born, Angelo was almost 15 years older and would soon make his way to America via Argentina. (John perished during WWII.) At the age of 13, Georgios followed Angelo to America and lived with his aunt Helen Sooklaris and her family in San Francisco. Georgios attended Abraham Lincoln High School and worked odd jobs, such as delivering the San Francisco Chronicle. At age 17, in search of full-time work, he canvassed the streets of San Francisco until he came across one store that would hire him—Go Getters Market. For nine years, Georgios worked alongside the owner, learning all facets of the business until he was able to purchase it.

In 1959, Georgios returned to Crete and spent two weeks getting to know his future bride, Chrisula Tsirindani, under the watchful eye of her uncle and his shotgun. The wedded couple returned to San Francisco and settled in the Mission and worked together for many years while raising their two children, Gregory and Georgia. Georgios transformed Go Getters Market into not only a place to buy groceries but also a sanctuary for those struggling. His generosity and kindness for the most vulnerable, coupled with his business savvy and penchant for marketing the lottery, created a place to shop, cash a check, and play a scratcher. Georgios earned the title “Mayor of Gough Street” and employed anyone humble and eager enough to pick up a broom, stock a shelf, or guard the door. In the ‘90s, Georgios turned an adjacent space into Go Getters Pizza. He took his passion for pizza to Foster City, where he opened a second location with his sister-in-law. He ran both for several years.

After 55 years of working seven days a week, Georgios sold Go Getters Market to his manager and retired. He spent the next 20 years with his beloved wife, watching his children and grandchildren thrive. Outside of his success as a businessman, Georgios proudly produced a community cookbook for the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral of San Francisco in 2000 and managed to obtain a recipe for chocolate chip cookies from First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Georgios was preceded in death by his wife Chrisula (October 2022), and his son, Gregory (February 2025). He leaves behind his daughter, Georgia Ellenikiotis, daughter-in-law Sophia Markoulakis, grandchildren Eleni Ellenikiotis (David Soleimani-Meigooni), Soula Ellenikiotis (Rocky Jagir), Chrisoula Markoulakis (Josh Shargel), Yianni Ellenikiotis (Victoria Han), George Markoulakis (Cory Dodson), George Ellenikiotis (Kelsie Ellenikiotis), and six great-grandchildren. Georgios held a special place in his heart for his brother Angelo’s children, who lovingly cared for him and honored him with lifelong deference.

Georgios will mostly be remembered for his deep love for his wife, Chrisula, and his endless pursuit to cure her Multiple Sclerosis. They are now reunited, where neither is suffering. He is composing a poem to song, a Cretan mandinada, about his eternal love and softly singing it for an audience of one.

Both the prayer service (Trisagion) at 7 pm on Tuesday, July 8, and the funeral at 10:30 am on Wednesday, July 9, will be held at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Cross, 900 Alameda de las Pulgas, Belmont, CA. A luncheon (makaria) and burial at the Greek Orthodox Memorial Park in Colma, CA, will follow the funeral. In place of flowers, remembrances made on Georgios’ behalf can be directed to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Cross, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, or the ALS Network.
