In Loving Memory of Danny Harold Garrett

The world knew Danny Harold Garrett (AKA, Sheepherder) as a fisherman, a hunter, a golfer, and a veteran. But to his family, he was so much more. On Friday, June 27, 2025, at the age of 81, Danny’s long journey came to a peaceful close. He was at home in Hardy, Virginia, his hand held firmly by his wife, Judy, ensuring he was not afraid as he left his mortal shackles behind.

Born in Virginia on May 3, 1944, to the late Gob and Phillis Garrett, Danny’s life was one of great passion and quiet perseverance. A proud veteran of the United States Army, he bravely served his country as an infantryman and sniper during the Vietnam War in 1969. Like many of his generation, he returned home with the weight of trauma that no person should have to bear. He was a complex man, but through it all, he held onto a light of hope and an unshakable love for his family.

After his time in the military, Danny found his peace and sanctuary in the outdoors. He was a renowned fisherman, a skilled hunter, and an avid golfer. He would famously choose a day on the lake or the links over household chores without a second thought, a trait his family remembers with a fond smile.

Above all else, Danny was devoted to his family. His capacity for love was the cornerstone of his life. He was a proud father to his five children, Shepard, Kerry, John, Martha, and Dana, and though he may not have always shown it perfectly, he loved each of them equally and deeply.

His heart belonged to his wife, Judy H. Garrett, whom he wedded on June 15, 1979. For 46 years, he was her devoted husband, honoring his vow to love her through thick and thin. His story also included a lasting friendship with his first wife, Hazel Garrett. Together, they modeled a partnership of mutual respect and a shared, unending love for their family.

While he loved his children dearly, he arguably loved his grandbabies and great-grandbabies even more. His memory will be cherished by his grandchildren, Justin, Jeremy, Kelsey, Michael, Jennifer, Nikki, and Tyler; and his great-grandchildren, Sasha and Kairi. He was also joyfully awaiting the arrival of another great-grandchild. Throughout his life, Danny drew strength from a personal and private faith in Jesus Christ, which provided him an anchor in life’s turbulent waters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gob and Phillis Garrett. He is survived by his beloved wife, Judy; all of his children; his sister, Suzi (John) and their children; and his cousin, Kerry; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Danny Garrett lived fully, loved fiercely, and will be missed beyond measure.

A celebration of Danny’s life will take place on Monday, July 7, 2025, at the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem, Virginia. The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. A reception will immediately follow.

Online condolences may be expressed at www.johnmoakey.com.
