Maria Veronica O’Neill (nee Sweeney), 95, of Havertown, PA passed away on Saturday, May 31. 2025. Marie was the beloved wife for 70 years of the late Robert J. O’Neill, who preceded her in death in June 2024. She was the devoted mother of Debora O’Neill (R. Bruce Morrison deceased), Brian O’Neill (Susan), and Karen Spohn (Peter). Marie is the loving “Mom Mom” to five grandchildren, Shannon Schriver (Robert), Patrick Morrison (Catherine), Casey Morrison (Brendan Smith), Thomas Spohn (Heaven), Joseph Spohn, and eight great grandchildren, Roman, Gia, Shawn, Samuel, Nathan, Frances, Penelope, and Tessa. She is the aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Marie was born at home on Christmas Day in 1929 to James and Mary Sweeney in Ballyboes, Donegal, Ireland. She was the sixth of eight children. She grew up on a farm in Ireland and left school after eighth grade to help work by becoming a live-in nanny following the death of her father. In 1948, at the age of seventeen, Marie came to America, where she later met and married her soul mate Bob in Philadelphia in 1953 and embarked on her life’s work of raising a family.

Marie proudly became a United States citizen in 1961 but never forgot her Irish heritage. The smell of freshly baked Irish Bread frequently wafted from the kitchen and visitors were always welcomed in her home with a cup of hot tea and chatty conversation.

Marie was a hard-working, loving and caring mother who embraced a deep and life-long devotion to the Blessed Mother. She prayed to Mary every day and made sure to place fresh flowers at the foot of a special statue in her home. She also relished every opportunity to make fresh flower crowns for her children to adorn Mary during May at Saint Denis school.

Marie loved the outdoors and in later years spent many afternoons and evenings with a cup of tea on her back patio. She had a special knack for gardening. Whatever Marie planted in her garden always thrived with abundant flowers and brilliant colors. With her husband, she built a home in the Poconos where they vacationed for many years with family and grandchildren. Marie also loved the Jersey shore. When her children were young, she vacationed on the beach and boardwalk in Wildwood and Ocean City, New Jersey. In later years, she spent many summers helping to raise her grandchildren in Ocean City, New Jersey. Marie was an avid Phillies fan and spent many hours watching Phillies games with her husband Bob. She was always up for a good game of Pinochle.

Family and friends are invited to her visitation on Friday, June 6, 2025, from 9:30 - 10:50 am at St. Denis Church, 2401 Saint Denis Lane, Havertown, PA 19083.
