Carlyle Robert Hooper, Jr., MSgt, USAF, Retired.

Carlyle Robert Hooper, Jr., known as “Carl” to co-workers and “Charlie” to close friends and neighbors, passed away on Saturday, May 31, 2025 following a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was 58 years old.

Born on July 28, 1966, in Waverly, New York, Carl spent his early childhood living with his grandparents on North Street in Athens, Pennsylvania. He later moved with his family to nearby Litchfield Township, just before the devastating flood of 1972.

Growing up in the countryside, Carl enjoyed a rural upbringing surrounded by his siblings, uncles, aunts, and eventually neighborhood friends. From a young age, he showed a natural curiosity for how things worked, often taking objects apart and putting them back together just for the challenge. His father taught him how to complete small jobs on family and neighbors’ cars, and from then on, those responsibilities fell to him. This was never a hardship -- tinkering with cars was something Carl always enjoyed.

Summers were spent exploring the woods and fields around his family home, which provided him and his siblings with endless hours of entertainment. These were the same woods where his father taught him to hunt, and where he would spend many winters hunting deer.

Carl was a graduate of Sayre Area High School, Class of 1984. As a member of the football team, he knew he would never play in the pros and wasn’t going to be the next “Mean Joe Greene,” but he learned to push himself physically and used the sport as a tool for personal growth. He graduated seventh in his class, proud of the hard work he put in both on the field and in the classroom.

In 1985, Carl made what he would later call “the best decision of his life” and enlisted in the United States Air Force. His military career spanned more than 23 years, taking him to four continents and 26 countries during both peace and wartime. Carl’s world expanded far beyond the 50-mile radius he used to say was the extent of his world.

While stationed in England, he met the love of his life, Joanne Renwick of Hermitage, Berkshire. They married in August 1989 and went on to raise two children, Alexander and Zoe. Together, they experienced history and culture across the globe as a military family.

Although proud of his service, Carl chose not to participate in veterans’ associations after retiring. In his words, he had given his 23 years and that felt like more than enough. At the time of his retirement, he was recognized for his steady good humor, resilience, and his ability to smile through both good times and bad -- qualities those closest to him knew well.

Returning to civilian life, Carl worked for DuPont in Towanda, where his military experience served him well. He was again known for his sense of humor and his willingness to do whatever was necessary to get the job done.

Family was always Carl’s top priority. Whether it was working on a car, fixing up a home, or lending a hand without being asked, he was always there for his loved ones. This included his extended family in the UK. He found peace in simple pleasures like sitting quietly in the woods, watching wildlife, even if it meant coming home empty-handed from a hunting trip, an activity his wife never quite understood but appreciated as something he enjoyed.

Carl is survived by his beloved wife, Joanne; his son, Alexander, and daughter-in-law Bridgette, along with his grandson Kieran; his daughter, Zoe, and her partner Zachary, along with his grandson Michael; his brother, Kevin; and his sister, Rhonda, and her partner Chris; his in-laws, John and Angela; sister-in-law, Samantha, along with his niece Anya and nephews, Cameron and Louis. He is predeceased by both of his parents, Carlyle and Carolyn, and his younger sister Kristina.

He will be remembered for his quiet strength, endless generosity, good humor, and his ability to find joy even through the toughest times. His legacy lives on in the family and friends who were blessed to know and love him.

A time of calling will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2025 from 12 to 1 at the Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly, New York. A memorial service to honor Carl’s life will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2025 at 1:00 PM at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly, New York with Rev. Melinda Artman officiating and full military honors will be accorded at 1:00 PM by the Valley Color Guard. Jo, Alexander and Zoe I chose a strong, sturdy, solid never changing tree, because that's the kind of person Carl was. Love, Mel and Paul
