Sandra Herald
<p>Sandra Michelle Herald, 83, of Jacksonville, passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at Jacksonville Memorial Hospital. She was born January 2, 1942, the daughter of William and Pauline Zaban. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Stephen Herald.</p><p><br></p><p>She is also survived by her son, Asa “Geordie” (Christie Elizabeth) Herald; daughter Gillian (James Ducat, Sr.) Friedman; grandchildren, Benjamin Herald, Emily Herald, Kyle Herald, and James Ducat, Jr.; two brothers, Robert Zaban and Mark Zaban; and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.</p><p><br></p><p>Sandra earned her master’s in teaching from Indiana University. She utilized her skills as a language arts teacher for more than 30 years in Jacksonville School District #117, first at Armstrong Junior High School (which became Jacksonville High School) and then Turner Junior High School (which became Jacksonville Middle School). To this day, many of her students are still able to recite from memory the Gettysburg address, which was part of her curriculum! In addition to teaching, Sandra was a founding member and secretary of the Morgan County Democratic Women’s club. She also enjoyed gardening, walking, coaching scholastic bowl, watching British dramas, collecting antiques, and spending time with her family.</p><p><br></p><p>A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday May 16, 2025, from 4:30 - 6:30 pm, at Williamson Funeral Home, located at 1405 Lincoln Ave in Jacksonville. Memorials are suggested to the Mia Ware Foundation or the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
