Melvia Lois Nesbitt

On February 1, 1938, in McCurtain County, Oklahoma, in the town of Harris, God blessed Scott Washington and Mozella Cook Washington with a beautiful baby girl, Melvia Lois Washington. In 1942, the family relocated to Tucson, Arizona, where Melvia received her early childhood education at Dunbar Elementary, John Spring Junior High, and Tucson High School. After graduation, she attended Thelma Walker's School of Cosmetology in Phoenix, Arizona.

On October 13, 1963, Melvia married the love of her life, Leon Nesbitt, Jr. They were blessed with four children: Rodney (deceased), Leon III, La Dawn, and Donald. In 1978, the family moved to Richardson, Texas, where Melvia expanded her entrepreneurial pursuits, including hair salons in both Tucson and Dallas. She paused her career to be a stay-at-home mother during the formative years of her children’s lives, giving them a foundation of love, faith, and strength.

Melvia accepted the Lord Jesus and remained steadfast in her faith. In 1965, she united with Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Tucson, Arizona, where her spiritual journey would grow and flourish.

Melvia’s life was forever changed one Monday evening in Tucson when her mother invited women from the missionary society to a meeting in their home. That evening, she was asked to read a bible verse from Matthew (10:28), and after reading, her life was never the same. From that transformational moment in faith, she became deeply committed to a life of service to the Lord, a devotion that shaped her every action thereafter.

Her passion for the Word of God led her to study deeply, and she attended the Bible Study Fellowship Institute for four years, preparing for a ministry to teach children, young adults, and women. She spent many years as a teacher in the Sunday School Department at North Garland Baptist Fellowship and mentored women through prayer and Bible study.

Her ministry extended beyond the walls of the church as she and Leon hosted a monthly Bible study in their home, the Richardson Care Cell, for several years. Melvia faithfully read through the complete Bible each year for 38-40 years, her unwavering devotion a testament to her love for the Lord.

In 2008, Melvia and Leon took their trip of a lifetime to Israel, a journey she cherished deeply. Shortly after their return, she was diagnosed with Parkinson's Syndrome, yet her faith remained steadfast. Even in the face of her illness, Melvia continued to inspire those around her with her strength and grace. Her legacy of faith, family, and unbreakable strength will have a lasting impact on all who knew and loved her.

Melvia was preceded in death by her parents, Scott Washington and Mozella Thornton; her son, Rodney Nesbitt; and her brothers - Joe Luis Washington, Richard Thornton, and Lee Thornton.

Those left to cherish fond memories include her devoted husband of 62 years, Leon Nesbitt, Jr.; her children - Dr. La Dawn Talbott of Reno, Nevada, Leon Nesbitt III (Stephanie) of Plano, Texas, and Donald Nesbitt of Dallas, Texas; seven grandchildren - Leon Nesbitt IV and Jayda Nesbitt of Plano, Texas, Ventura Rivera (Erica) of Santa Barbara, California, Celesta Rivera Talbott, Zane Talbott and Payton Talbott, all of Reno, Nevada, and Daphne Nesbitt of Washington D.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Luna Rivera of Santa Barbara, California and Veni Rivera of Long Beach, California; her brother, Dwight Thornton of Carson, California; and a host of other relatives, friends, and brothers and sisters in Christ.

Melvia’s life was defined by her unwavering faith, her selfless love, and her deep commitment to serving others. She was a Proverbs 31 woman, embodying strength, grace, and wisdom in every aspect of her life. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed.

Though we mourn her passing, we find comfort in knowing that Melvia is now with the Lord, her Savior. Her love for us will never fade, and her example will continue to guide us in the years to come.
