James Jay Kaster VI

February 3, 1960 - April 22, 2025

It doesn't make sense that a man with a heart of gold would leave us so soon after a surgery intended to make that very heart stronger. But that's how we lost James Jay Kaster VI of San Marcos, Texas--suddenly, unexpectedly--on April 22, 2025. The scheduled open-heart procedure was a success, but a fierce lung infection followed, one that even Jim--Jamie, Bronco, brother, uncle, friend, lover, and all-around great human--couldn't outrun this time.

Those close to him knew he'd already used up all of his nine lives many times over-crossing the equator on a U.S. Navy battleship at 18, surviving a high-speed motorcycle crash on Austin's RM 2222 at 22, white-knuckle rafting in Colorado, skydiving in Texas, tearing down Utah's mountain bike trails, and scaling the rocky shores of northern Maine, where he planned to retire in just 75 days.

Jim was kind. Hilarious. Fiercely loyal. And, when necessary, mean as hell. He could fix anything. He knew everything-or at least made you believe he did. He loved dogs and dogs loved him right back. He built a successful business-Centex Environmental-as a building inspector and leaves behind a legion of devoted clients, colleagues, and friends.

He is survived by sisters Deborah Pfluger and Laura Mathews (Austin, TX), brother Rustie Kaster (San Rafael, CA), cousin Kimberly Herard (Stewart, MS), a gaggle of loving nieces and nephews, soulmate Yvette Weinheimer (Stonewall, TX), and his best friend Andy Reeder (Austin, TX). He is preceded in death by parents James Jay Kaster V and Helene Vogelpohl Kaster, sister Kathie Geary, and brother John Kaster.

Jim will be remembered as the sun lights the peaks of the highest mountains-brilliant, bold, and full of life. Always climbing. Always shining.

Join family and friends for a celebration of life on Saturday, May 17th from 4-6 pm at the Rudy's Bar-B-Q, 2451 S. Capital of Texas Hwy, Austin, TX 78746.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Jim's honor to the Central Texas SPCA. https://www.centraltexasspca.org/ways-to-donate
