Cynthia Ann Withem
<p>Cynthia Ann Uptain-Withem, age 65, of Spencer, Indiana, passed away at Indiana University Bloomington Hospital on April 22, 2025 with her husband, Steve Withem, of 43 years by her side.</p><p><br></p><p>Cindy was born in Hammond, Indiana on September 5, 1959 to Melvin and Elizabeth (Hancock) Uptain. She grew up in Munster, Indiana, and graduated from Munster High School in 1977. Cindy and Steve first met at the Wells Library cafeteria and were married November 8, 1981 in Beck Chapel on the Indiana University campus after she finished her bachelor’s degree from the Paul H. O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Cindy returned to IU and earned her teaching certification and taught many years in Owen County’s adult education program and helped hundreds of students successfully earn their G.E.D.s.</p><p><br></p><p>Cindy enjoyed travelling and visited many places around the world and here in the US, including Germany, Hawaii, Italy, and most recently, a Greek island. Cindy was a prolific reader and her interests were wide-ranging including bestsellers, classics, as well as nonfiction and health-related matters. She was an expert Sudoku player and an exceptional crossword puzzle solver, but more than anything, she enjoyed spending time with her family and her beloved dogs. Cindy faced many health-related challenges throughout her life beginning at age 11 when she was diagnosed with diabetes. As a double-organ (pancreas and kidney) transplant recipient, she was incredibly grateful for the chance to live, and she showed it by being a model patient and a dedicated teacher.</p><p><br></p><p>She is survived by her loving husband Steve Withem, her brother Robert Uptain and wife Amy England, and her dog Jojo.</p><p><br></p><p>In honoring Cindy’s express wishes, no public services will be held. </p>September 5, 1959 - April 22, 202509/05/195904/22/2025
