Memorial trees planted for:
Randy Joe Courtney

Randy Joe Courtney, 65, of Cynthiana, KY, traded in his work boots for angel wings on Sunday, April 13, 2025. Born August 16, 1959, in Harrison County, to the late Ronald and Delores Courtney, Randy lived a life rooted in hard work, faith, and just the right amount of stubbornness.

A proud lifelong farmer, Randy raised tobacco, cattle, and hay his whole life - and more than a few eyebrows with his stories. He believed idle hands were the devil’s workshop, which is why his garage was always full of “projects” that may or may not have ever gotten finished (but don’t worry, he was working on it). For 18 years, Randy also put his skills to work as an electrician.

He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Wanda Courtney, who somehow managed to keep up with him and his many adventures. Together they built a life full of love, laughter, and great food—because Randy never turned down a home-cooked meal. He also leaves behind his son RJ Courtney, stepson Chris (Jessy) Taylor, grandchildren Chesney Taylor, Rylan Courtney, and Logan Courtney, and great-grandchildren Hank, Lynkoln, Colton, and Annalynn—all of whom will surely miss his quick wit, unforgettable stories, and his knack for stirring up just enough trouble to keep things interesting. He is also survived by his siblings Ricky Courtney, Ronda (Johnny) Phillips, and Roxanna (Mike) Wade. He was preceded in death by his sister Reva Hatcher, who no doubt greeted him in heaven with a “What took you so long?”

Randy was a devout Christian and a longtime member of Christian Faith Center, where he and Wanda worshipped faithfully. He carried a quiet, steady faith in God and the firm belief that hard work, prayer, and a good cup of coffee and cigarette could get you through just about anything. (Bonus points if there was sweet tea nearby.) He loved collecting toy tractors and pocketknives, but even more than that, he loved his family, his church, and the land he worked. Randy was the kind of man who’d give you the shirt off his back - though it’d probably be covered in grease and smell faintly like diesel fuel.

“It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops.” – 2 Timothy 2:6. Randy worked hard his whole life – now it’s his turn to reap the eternal reward.

In honor of Randy, pour yourself a good cup of coffee, share a story that makes someone laugh, and thank God for the day.

Services for Randy will be on Friday, April 18, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. at Ware Funeral Home. Visitation will be the evening prior, Thursday, April 17, 2025, from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., also at Ware Funeral Home. Pastor Kim Smith will lead his services, and burial will follow in Battle Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers will be RJ Courtney, Chris Taylor, Bud Whitaker, Chris Arnold, Gerald Wright, and Nolan Smith. Honorary pallbearers include Jim Young, Junior Fields, Debbie Casebolt, Ann Roberts, and his amazing cardiologist, Dr. Ranita Crouch. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Randy’s church, Christian Faith Center, P.O. Box 155, Cynthiana, KY 41031.
