With hearts full of love and gratitude, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, Barbara Copeland, who left us at the age of 93. Barbara lived a vibrant, joyful life—one rich with laughter, adventure, love, and unforgettable memories.

Born and raised in Duxbury, Massachusetts, Barbara was a woman of remarkable spirit, passion, and energy. Her adventure began in 1957 when she set out on a solo journey to San Francisco from Boston to marry the love of her life, Ralph Copeland. Together, they built a beautiful life—raising their two children, Julie and Richard, and forming many cherished lifelong friendships along the way. They also shared a love of golf, even though Barbara didn’t start playing until she was in her 40s!

She became a regular at the WGAM events, both as a player and as a rules official. Her proudest achievement was winning the Massachusetts Mother-Son Tournament twice, in 1984 and 1990. At the incredible age of 90, she and Richard participated as guests in the tournament and shot an amazing 82!

Barbara also had a passion for cooking, inspired by her culinary idol, Julia Child (whom she would have loved to meet). She was known for her banana bread, brownies, and her famous blueberry cake, which was always a welcome treat when family visited. Her holiday meals became legendary—warm, delicious, and always made with love.

Barbara lived in Medfield for 30 years before moving to Osterville and then The Pinehills in Plymouth. Most recently, Barbara lived at The Village in Duxbury, where she thrived in its inspiring community, making new and close friends and enjoying her weekly bridge games and personal training sessions in the gym.

Barbara is survived by her two children: her son Richard, his wife Susan, and their two sons, Matthew and Ryan; and her daughter Julie, along with Julie’s two children—Alyssa and her husband Varghese, and Jason and his wife Ari. She is also survived by her son-in-law, Chip. Her legacy lives on through them—through her wisdom, her love of life, and her generous spirit.

We’re so thankful for the time we had with her and the happiness she brought into our lives. Though we’ll miss her dearly, we find comfort in knowing that her love will continue to live through us.

It was a life well-lived. Rest in peace, Mom. You were a treasure to us all. We’ll be raising a Manhattan in your honor!

Services will be private.
