Daniel E. Smitson

Muncie - Daniel E. Smitson went to be with the Lord on March 14, 2025, after a several-year battle with Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD). Dan was born on December 27, 1964, in Dearborn, Michigan to Robert and Marilyn Smitson.

He attended Muncie Northside High School, then graduated from Gow High School in South Wales, New York. He returned to Muncie and received his Bachelor of Arts in General Studies, with emphasis in elementary education from Ball State University.

Early on, Dan’s interests and talent in technology drew him to pursue a successful career in information technology where he thrived in various IT positions for over thirty years.

Dan was a member of The Garden at Gethsemane, the same church he grew up attending. He was instrumental in helping to renew the Garden at Main Street. He also served on the Board of Directors for Faith Builders Ministry for several years.

Dan was a devoted Christian, husband to Pamela, father to Katie, stepfather to Deana, grandfather to Brynlee, and son to his devoted parents. Most everyone knew that his daughter Katie was the light of his world. He was always there for her and encouraged his “Princess” to get involved in the activities that interested her the most. He made sure he was right beside her (probably because of the ‘kid’ in Dan), making sure she had everything she needed for her best years of experience in 4-H, Girl Scouts, and Muncie Ballet. He was not only Katie’s encourager, but he was also eager to be actively involved himself to be present with her, always with her during 4-H events, practices and performances in ballet, and he proudly served as the Delaware County Girls Scout Service Unit Manager and the Troop “Do-Dad”. He set the bar high for Katie’s selection in a mate!

Dan was loved and cherished by his family. He was best known for his wonderful sense of humor and his willingness to help and serve others with joy. He especially enjoyed spending time with the love of his life, Pamela, his talented daughter Katie, and his delightful granddaughter, Brynlee, with whom he was very proud to be actively involved in 4-H with, as well as attend her Delta Girls Softball Association games. Dan was so proud of all his girls.

He is survived by his loving wife Pamela (Taylor) Smitson, his daughter, Kathryn “Katie” Smitson (Devin Meade), his stepdaughter Deana Moles (Gary), his granddaughter Brylnee Moles, his father Robert Smitson, his sister Sandy Hunter (Brad), and his brother Michael Smitson (Chelle). He also leaves behind two brothers-in-law, Darvin (Tammy) Taylor and David (Twila) Taylor, three sisters-in-law, Patricia Taylor Neal, Wilda Taylor Evans (John), and Betty Taylor Asberry (Johnny); as well as numerous wonderfully amazing nieces and nephews with whom he loved dearly.

Dan was preceded in death by his devoted mother, Marilyn K. Smitson and his brother, Richard “Ricky” Smitson.

The family of Daniel E. Smitson wish to express deep gratitude to the caregivers who provided love and support during Dan’s final journey: Patricial Neal (sister-in-law), Abigail Meadows, Virginia “Ginny” Goul, and the nurses and aides with Heart to Heart Hospice. Your patience, kindness, and genuine concern brought comfort not only to Dan, but to Pam and Katie as well. We will always remember the peace, dignity, and exceptional care you provided. We love you!

Services will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2025 in The Garden at Gethsemane of Muncie with Rev. Kate Muhlbaier officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery, New Castle.

Family and friends may call from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 28, 2025 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Garden at Gethsemane Church, Muncie Indiana, or TheAFTD.org to further research on this debilitating disease.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.meeksmortuary.com.
