Rosalind Gorton

Rosalind “Roz” Gorton passed away peacefully on March 12, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Roz and her beloved husband, Bob, built a vibrant life in Manhattan, Kansas, where they raised their children: Elaine Kaifes; Catherine Hogan (Jim); Christine Robinson (Bob); and Robert Gorton. Their home was a hub of joy and hospitality, renowned for memorable Fourth of July celebrations, pig roasts, and their Gourmet Group’s traveling dinners. Roz was the extraordinarily proud grandmother of Katie, Jason (Amy), Elizabeth (Brady), Sam, Jack, Emma, Caroline, Hannah, Olivia, and Lillian. In her later years, her great-grandson, Otto Tepesch, became the light of her life, bringing her endless smiles and joy. She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Karen; husband, Bob; sister, Charlotte; and parents, Olive and John T. Davis.

A true renaissance woman, Roz possessed a multitude of passions and talents. As a master gardener, she spent countless joyful hours tending to her plants under the warm sun. Her quilting skills were evident in the special baby quilts crafted for each grandchild, and her prowess as a seamstress shone brightly when she designed and sewed a wedding dress worn by each of her daughters. An adventurous cook, Roz explored world cuisines long before it became commonplace. Later in life, she embraced painting, with her beautiful watercolors proudly displayed in her children’s homes.

Roz’s dedication extended beyond her home. She worked at Kansas State Bank, assisted PhD students by typing their dissertations, volunteered as an English as a Second Language teacher, and led Brownie and Girl Scout troops. An avid sports fan, she cheered passionately for the Kansas City Chiefs, Royals, and was a proud supporter of the Kansas State Wildcats. Her appetite for reading was voracious throughout her life.

Never one to shy away from community involvement, Roz was an active member of numerous clubs, including the World Friendship Club, Garden Club, various book clubs, cooking clubs, bridge club, investment club and quilting club.

After Bob’s retirement, the couple traveled extensively, visiting Europe, Hawaii, and embarking on road trips across the United States. They held a special affection for Monterey, California, and Cape May, New Jersey. Their infectious joy and curiosity led them to forge friendships wherever they went.

In Roz’s speech at her 80th birthday party she said through tears “it’s said that friends enrich our lives, if so I’m very rich indeed.”

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Stratford Commons for their compassionate care during Roz’s final years, as well as to the incredible dedicated team at Monarch Hospice.

A service will be held on June 7th at 11:30 am at Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, followed by a celebration of her life at Colbert Hills. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org.

Condolences from Fairhope, Alabama. Aunt Roz was an accomplished Gardener... this basket and planting a tree in her memory seems appropriate.
